In today’s world, people track steps, workouts, sleep, or diets, but none of these apps capture a complete view of one’s life. The result is fragmented data that lacks context, leaving people unable to connect day-to-day activities with bigger life moments or patterns. Time Atlas Labs aims to solve this gap with its “Active Life Tracking” app, which creates a private timeline of one’s life by combining motion, location, personal notes, and activity recognition.

Backed by €1.8M in fresh funding led by Lifeline Ventures, the Helsinki-based startup is set to push beyond traditional health or fitness tracking and empower people to understand themselves better. The round also includes backing from high-profile angel investors such as DuoLingo co-founder Severin Hacker and Linear co-founder Tuomas Artman.

Teemu Mattila, Partner at Lifeline Ventures, said, “People want to know how their decisions affect them, and we are excited to be part of this journey, supporting the company in redefining the category and giving people more powerful insights about their lives than ever before.”

The fresh funding will be used to further develop the mobile app, which is available globally for free on the App Store, and to grow its user base with a new and improved version planned for launch soon.

Helping people live more active and reflective lives

The company is led by CEO and co-founder Aapo Kyrölä, best known for creating Habbo Hotel and the Moves tracking app (later acquired by Facebook). After years at Facebook’s AI teams and returning to Finland, he co-founded Time Atlas Labs with Markus Stenberg, a veteran security engineer with experience at Cisco, SSH Communications, and cloud unicorn Aiven, and Juho Pennanen, a machine learning researcher with a Ph.D. in mathematics and ecology and a history of successful startups. The co-founders, who first met over 20 years ago through their shared passion for the board game Go, bring deep expertise in privacy, security, and AI.

Inspired by his experience as a father of twins and the regret of not documenting earlier key life moments, Kyrölä designed Time Atlas to make journaling effortless and meaningful. He also holds a distinct vision for AI’s role in the app: rather than letting AI make decisions for users, it acts as a reflective partner or coach, enabling humans to think better by learning from their recorded life data.

The company’s mission is straightforward yet ambitious: help people live more active and reflective lives by capturing and visualising the richness of everyday experiences.

Behind the scenes: high-accuracy activity and location tracking

Behind the app is proprietary Moloc (motion & location) technology, which allows high-accuracy activity and location tracking without draining the phone battery.

Unlike many competitors in the wellness or productivity space, including Gentler Streak, Gyroscope, and device-tied apps like Oura, Time Atlas emphasises privacy as a core feature: all data stays on users’ devices unless they explicitly choose to share it. This positions the app differently from health-focused wearables or fitness-first apps, aiming instead to become a holistic, private life journal.

What’s next?

The startup’s immediate priorities are cementing product-market fit and building features that encourage strong retention. Monetisation will follow if users are willing to pay for more advanced tools.

Kyrölä concluded, “We are at the very beginning of this journey. The vision is to give people a tool to track, connect, and reflect on their lives, in a way that’s entirely private.”
