Berlin-based foodtech company specialising in plant-based egg alternatives, Perfeggt has bagged funding to extend its pre-seed funding round to $4 million. This round comes three months after it raised $2.8 million in its first funding round for the initial launch and to expand further in Europe later in 2022.

An impressive group of leading European foodtech entrepreneurs, startup founders and investors joined the company. The latest supporters of Perfeggt include the founders of Gorillas, Foodspring, Just Spices, and MyMuesli, prominent tech entrepreneurs Lea-Sophie Cramer, Verena Pausder and Eric Quidenus Wahlforss.

Also, Atomico angel investor Deepali Nangia, space and deep tech fund Urania Ventures, and Dr. Albert Schmidbauer, the founder of Biogena participated in the round. The future of our food system and the way we eat is also a field in which the Atomico Angels Fund is active with well-known startups.

The proceeds of this additional raise will be used by Perfeggt to invest in product research and development, team growth and market launch. Initial consumer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive during the product tastings in Hamburg, Germany in February and early March. Further pop-up tastings in German and European cities will follow in the coming months.

Perfeggt CEO and co-founder Tanja Bogumil, said: “Together, our goal is to transform the food industry and to challenge the way we produce and consume one of the most popular animal products – the egg. The overwhelming positive reaction to Perfeggt over the past few months shows that the market is ready.”

Sustainable chicken eggs from plants

Perfeggt has tapped into the foodtech market with its plant-based egg alternatives at the right time. Currently, plant-based products such as oat milk or vegan sausages are on the fast track with a booming global market. Recently, European premium plant-based steaks producer Juicy Marbles and meat alternatives startup Planted got funded in this sector.

However, the market for alternative eggs remains untapped despite enormous growth potential. Perfeggt wants to do the same for the egg.

Worldwide, over 1.3 trillion eggs are
consumed annually with 110 billion eggs in Europe alone. The plant-based liquid egg alternative launched by Perfeggt is formulated from field bean proteins and can be fried in a pan just like traditional scrambled eggs or an omelet.

From the sustainability perspective, eggs are more climate friendly than meat proteins. Also its carbon emissions are much lower than other products such as cheese, fish, etc. The egg alternative from Perfeggt is more environmentally sustainable. The alternative egg substitute is estimated to use 95% lesser freshwater resources, 74% reduced greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 50% farmland.

Plant-based egg alternative

Founded by Tanja Bogumil, Bernd Becker and Gary Lin in 2021, Perfeggt is developing a plant-based egg alternative to mimic the taste and texture of chicken eggs using pioneering research.

Perfeggt works towards disrupting the food industry by moving away from the existing processes towards a more sustainable and caring approach to food production.

Additionally, the company is dedicated to creating an authentic egg alternative that doesn’t compromise on flavour, texture or taste. The company’s first product, a liquid egg substitute, can be used to prepare different dishes such as scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast using only plant-based ingredients. This product will soon be available in food services and retail.

Perfeggt’s R&D site in Emsland, Germany works closely with Wageningen University & Research, which is known for its life sciences research, to test plant-based protein sources and their combinations that come closest to the nutritional and functional properties of animal products.
