Healthtech 1, a London-based startup that automates administrative tasks in primary care for the NHS, has raised £2.7 million. The round was led by London-based VC Moonfire (which backed GOALS and Mindstone), and Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator alongside a number of angels.
Previously, Healthtech 1 received a £310,000 grant from government-backed agency Innovate UK in 2023.
While the company is currently deployed in 10% of GP practices in the UK, the company claims to target over 90% by 2025. The company also plans to double its headcount of 15 by the end of 2024.
What challenge does it tackle?
Currently, patients register themselves at a generator practitioner by manually filling out either a physical form or an online one. These registration forms usually have around 18 data points, which is then manually inputted into the practice’s operating system. This registration process is slow and prone to errors.
Founded by former Monzo web engineer Peter Huang and ex-Accenture consultant Raj Kohli in 2021, Healthtech 1 automates processes such as GP registration and lab reports.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, this was a temporary project to provide workload relief to NHS staff. As of 2024, the company has claimed to have saved more than 85,000 hours of NHS staff time.
What does Healthtech 1 do?
The company’s product conducts identity checks against NHS records, writes the data into the system and identifies areas to the practice where they might need to pay more attention, such as safeguarding.
As per the company, it can save practices around 15 minutes of receptionists’ time per registration.
“When you work inside a GP practice every day you realise that NHS staff are in desperate need of tech that works,” said Raj Kohli, co-founder of Healthtech 1. “What’s the bet that this little startup inside an NHS GP practice can have a more positive impact on primary care with £2.7m than the next government?”
What do we think about Healthtech 1?
The startup offers a promising solution to streamline administrative tasks in primary care, addressing inefficiencies and error-prone manual processes. Its automation of GP registration and lab reports, combined with significant time savings for NHS staff, indicates strong potential for widespread adoption. With substantial funding and a clear growth plan, Healthtech 1 is well-positioned to make a significant impact on primary care.
