NVIDIA and OpenAI have joined forces and announced the “largest AI infrastructure project in history.” Companies signed a letter of intent to develop at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centres, powered by NVIDIA systems.
The buildout, expected to involve millions of GPUs, is aimed at providing the compute capacity for OpenAI’s next generation of models. Under the agreement, NVIDIA intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, tied to the staged deployment of the planned infrastructure.
“NVIDIA and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT,” says Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward — deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”
The first gigawatt is scheduled to be deployed in the second half of 2026, using NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform.
NVIDIA to be the primary compute and networking partner
As part of the arrangement, NVIDIA will act as a primary compute and networking partner for OpenAI’s planned infrastructure expansion.
“Everything starts with compute,” said Sam Altman, cofounder and CEO of OpenAI. “Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilise what we’re building with NVIDIA to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”
The companies will also coordinate development roadmaps for hardware, software, and model training.
OpenAI reports more than 700 million weekly active users, with adoption spanning enterprises, small businesses, and developers. This effort complements OpenAI’s existing work with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate partners, who are also engaged in large-scale AI infrastructure projects.
“We’ve been working closely with NVIDIA since the early days of OpenAI,” said Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI. “We’ve utilised their platform to create AI systems that hundreds of millions of people use every day. We’re excited to deploy 10 gigawatts of compute with NVIDIA to push back the frontier of intelligence and scale the benefits of this technology to everyone.”
Both companies look forward to finalising the details of this new phase of strategic partnership in the coming weeks.
