Woke AI: Elon Musk is working on a ChatGPT rival

Ever since ChatGPT was unveiled in November, the tech industry is leaving no stone unturned to come up with their version of “generative” artificial intelligence (AI) that gives ChatGPT a run for its money.

This time, Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk have joined the likes of Snapchat and Google. He is reportedly looking to compete with OpenAI, a company that he co-founded, with his own form of artificial intelligence.

Musk is now thinking of creating an AI that would apparently be less “woke” than ChatGPT, and for that to happen, he is taking advice from AI researchers and experts, so that they can help him in making his own AI chatbot.

Musk has publicly chastised OpenAI for implementing protections that prevent ChatGPT from producing potentially offensive language. Recently he tweeted, “The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly.”

He took his criticisms a step further last week, slamming OpenAI itself. “OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft,” Musk claimed. “Not what I intended at all.”

However, as he believes the era of artificial general intelligence is inevitable, Musk is deeply invested in artificial intelligence. “AI+human vs AI+human is the next phase, but the human part will decrease in relevance over time, except perhaps as well, like our limbic system is to our cortex,” he said.

Musk cited ideological differences for leaving OpenAI in 2018 and it has been reported that machine learning boffin Igor Babuschkin, who played a key role in making Google DeepMind and has recently quit, will be the backbone of Musk’s formative AI company.

ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, has quickly grabbed attention for its detailed responses and articulate answers across many knowledge domains.

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that can hold interactive discussions. ChatGPT is based on the GPT-3 family of big language models and has been fine-tuned using supervised and reinforcement learning approaches.

ChatGPT may respond to follow-up questions, admit mistakes, dispute faulty premises, and reject unsuitable requests thanks to the dialogue style.

OpenAI is a San Francisco-based research organisation dedicated to promoting artificial intelligence (AI) technology in ways that benefit humanity.

Established in 2015 by industry luminaries including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, OpenAI’s objective is to “address the challenge of AI alignment – how to make sure that as we build AI, it works in the interest of humans.”
