Enough of ChatGPT! It’s here, there, and everywhere! Google is aggressively working on a competitor, and Microsoft is considering investment in it.
In recent years, artificial intelligence has become an attractive tool to automate tasks and provide predictive insights. With the ability to learn, adapt, and make predictions, AI systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated and are capable of performing tasks that were once thought to be the exclusive domain of humans.
Numerous AI-powered tools are available on the Internet, but very few have garnered the attention of the masses and enjoyed their existence like ChatGPT.
But there’s another tool that’s vying for its place is Character.AI. Unlike ChatGPT, Character.AI’s sole purpose is to “entertain” with fictional conversations and ideas.
Founded by Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, who had previously worked on Google’s LaMDA, Character is a full-stack Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) company.
Currently in beta mode, Character.AI brings the science-fiction dream of open-ended conversations and collaborations with computers to life.
To simplify it, the AI tool lets you have live chats with all sorts of characters, including Elon Musk, Tony Stark, historical figures, and fictional characters, in real time.
“We are building the next generation of dialog agents—with a long tail of applications spanning entertainment, education, general question-answering, and others,” says the company.
Character.AI is powered by the company’s deep learning models, including large language models, built and trained from the ground up with the conversation in mind.
“These systems are not designed for truth,” Mr. Shazeer said in an interview with The New York Times. “They are designed for plausible conversation.”
How does it work?
Character.AI is based on neural language models.
Meaning a supercomputer reads enormous amounts of text and learns to assume what words might come next in any given situation.
Through Character.AI, users can collaborate with the computer to write a dialog, and the computer creates the other character’s lines, giving the illusion that you are talking with the other character.
“Needless to say, a hallucinating supercomputer is not a source of reliable information. Still, we hope that you find Character.AI a useful tool for imagination, brainstorming, language learning, and a host of other purposes we have not yet imagined,” says the company.
Character AI is similar to AI-powered conversation tools like Inworld AI, AI Dungeon, and Chai.
It lets you build a character
Character.AI platform allows users to create their characters and bring them to life. The platform does this by using two methods:
Quick mode: It allows creators to able to create exciting Characters in less than a minute
Advanced mode: It allows adventurous creators to perfect their Character by using more powerful tools.
After giving it a personality and some parameters, “characters” made by users can be shared with the community to interact with others. If interested, check it out in detail in their Character Book.
How to use Character.AI?
Step 1: Go to the Character AI website.
Step 2: Choose a character you want to talk to.
Step 3: Initially, you aren’t required to sign-up, however, the conversation has limitations. You must sign in through your Google or Facebook account to go for a long one.
The company says both iOS and Android apps are in development and will be coming soon! Character.AI can be accessed through the web browser on both desktop and mobile.
