Los Angeles-based Spark, an app where users can play, create, and connect to bring to life original digital art, has picked up $2.5 million in seed funding. The financing round was led by Konvoy (which backed Legends of Learning, Solsten, Ready Player Me, and Bytebrew) along with participation from Long Journey.

Product development plans

The funds raised will be used for product development, including expanding the variety of digital art tools and creating new game modes.

Laura Mae Brown, Co-founder, and CEO of Spark commented: “Spark is a happy place users can go to relax and find their creative freedom, a place of joyful creation and self-care that frees users from some of their worries and expectations. We are thrilled to announce this seed financing and take the next step in our journey to help people find joy, excitement, and community through tech-enabled creativity.”

Josh Chapman, the Managing Partner at Konvoy, added: “Spark is putting creativity and play at the heart of the user experience by giving people easy-to-use tools and effortless inspiration to create truly amazing digital art. We are thrilled to lead this investment round as one of our first investments into a creator-led company. We believe Spark is pioneering a new frontier at the intersection of art and the gaming industry.”

Spark Co-founder, Moriah Elizabeth, commented: “Spark is a new way to bring digital creativity to a new level of fun while being approachable for anyone interested in creativity. We want to develop a place to create, experiment, and make art in a low-pressure environment. I am very excited to be a part of this new and uplifting creative community.”

Brainchild of prominent YouTuber

Spark was founded in 2021 by video game industry veteran, Laura Mae Brown with previous experience at EA, Riot Games, and Amazon), and arts and crafts influencer, Moriah Elizabeth, who has 7.8 million subscribers on YouTube. Spark, a product of the venture studio at talent management company Night, has built a team based across the US and Mexico.

Born out of a desire to combine creativity and connectivity with game mechanics, Spark is oriented around the belief that being creative is a basic human need and that, irrespective of skill level, everyone has the ability to create. It aims to be the go-to destination for creative expression, games, and fun. The app’s digital canvas combines the positive aspects of design and art with gaming and online social connections, allowing users to explore and discover the joy of creating.

Spark provides a digital space for creative experimentation, expression, and design, all with wellbeing at its core. Its app has a number of embedded tools and inspiration galleries that provide users with a basis to learn from one another. The simplified toolkit features pre-drawn assets, patterns, and animations making creations achievable in a few minutes.

The app also hosts multiplayer co-creating where users can join events, quests, and mini-games, such as completing collaborative drawing tasks or journeying through challenge-filled adventures. It uses game mechanics to enrich in-app experiences for its users so that they can enjoy the full creative process, from idea conception, to creation, and the end product.
