Avantyr Capital, the new hedge fund founded by former Viking Global CIO Ning Jin, has taken a significant step toward its anticipated launch later this year by filing its first ADV regulatory document. The filing reveals a team of 19 employees, including 10 investment professionals, operating out of headquarters at 450 Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan.
Targeting a fourth-quarter kickoff, Avantyr Capital aims to raise at least $1 billion in assets under management. The firm will focus on sectors including technology, media, telecoms, consumer, financials, and industrials. Its investment strategy centres on thorough fundamental research augmented by alternative datasets and AI-powered analytics.
Avantyr Capital investment team taking shape
Jin has recruited investors from across leading hedge funds and private equity firms. Reported hires include:
- Terrence Cheng, previously at L2 Capital and Tybourne Capital, is set to lead industrials research.
- Adam Marcus, formerly of Maven and Tourbillon Capital, will oversee financials.
- Lea Zhang, who covered US and Chinese technology and consumer companies at Coatue.
- Christopher Parks, an analyst from Tiger Cub Matrix Capital.
- Andrew Seketa, a Blackstone associate, will be a TMT analyst.
- Christopher Fletcher, formerly with KKR, is now joining as an analyst.
These professionals join early investment hires Alex Mendez, a former Viking analyst, and Sunjay Mishra, a former Tourbillon executive. Other senior appointments include head trader Niraj Bhatt, investor relations head Lauren Lyons, COO Kelly Skura, and general counsel Vanessa Di Simone.
Rooting Avantyr Capital in Viking tradition
Jin spent 17 years at Viking Global before leaving in August 2024 to establish Avantyr Capital. He named the firm after “avanti,” the Italian word for “forward” or “ahead.”
The launch follows a trend of senior Viking alumni establishing their own firms. Jin joins figures such as D1’s Dan Sundheim, Alua’s Tom Purcell, and Anomaly’s Ben Jacobs- former CIOs who have spun out to start new investment managers.
Outlook
As one of the most closely watched hedge fund debuts in 2025, Avantyr’s blend of fundamental insight, alternative data, and AI-driven analysis is expected to resonate with institutional investors. Although the firm has yet to disclose assets under management and declined to comment on the filing, all eyes remain on Avantyr’s progress as the year unfolds.
