Sequoia Capital launches $950M fund to bet on next-generation startups

Sequoia Capital, known for spotting giants like Google, Airbnb, and Nvidia early, has unveiled two new funds, a $750 million early-stage fund and a $200 million seed fund.

The launch follows a turbulent period for the firm. After restructuring in 2021 into an evergreen model to hold long-term stakes, Sequoia faced setbacks, including a $200 million loss from its FTX investment and its 2023 split from India and China operations. Yet, rather than retreating, it’s refocusing on what built its legacy: backing great founders from day one.

Betting early, building deep

In a market where AI startup valuations are inflating by the week, getting in early ensures both lower entry prices and meaningful ownership. The firm’s disciplined approach is already showing results: early bets in Clay, Harvey, n8n, Sierra, and Temporal have multiplied in value as the AI wave surges.

Recent deals underscore Sequoia’s eye for potential. It was the first investor in security tester Xbow, AI reliability platform Traversal, and Reflection AI, a DeepSeek rival. All have since raised substantial follow-on rounds at far higher valuations. The firm recruited a former Databricks CRO to Xbow’s board, connected Traversal to over 30 prospective clients, and introduced Reflection AI to Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, resulting in a $500 million investment from the chipmaker.

A legacy reinforced by focus

Even after five decades at the top of venture capital, Sequoia’s greatest strength may be its restraint. While others chase hype cycles, it is quietly reinforcing its foundation: founders, early-stage conviction, and hands-on support. The firm’s newly renovated office includes a striking visual reminder of this ethos.

By reaffirming its early-stage roots at a time of market exuberance, Sequoia is sending a clear message to founders and rivals alike. Its compass still points to the same direction that built Silicon Valley’s most valuable companies, long-term belief in bold ideas, before the rest of the world takes notice.
