Back in July, it was reported that California-based startup Fireworks AI is all set to secure $552 million in funding at a potential valuation of $4 billion. Now, the cloud platform powering AI applications for Uber, Shopify, and Genspark, has raised a $250 million Series C round at a $4 billion valuation. The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Index Ventures, and Evantic, with support from Sequoia Capital, bringing its total funding to $327 million.
The fresh funding will accelerate Fireworks’ expansion and technology roadmap. The company plans to deepen investments in algorithms, model quality, developer toolchains, and software infrastructure while scaling globally. Key hires across engineering, product, and go-to-market teams are also on the horizon.
Empowering enterprises beyond generic AI models
While most AI systems rely on generic models, Fireworks enables companies to build applications tailored to their unique data. These models adapt to specific workflows, customer behaviour, and internal knowledge bases, creating sharper, more efficient AI tools.
The company’s approach centres on a “product-model co-design” framework. It means every customer interaction feeds back into the model, improving it continuously. By merging reinforcement learning with real-time data loops, Fireworks helps companies fine-tune AI performance across cost, speed, and quality without losing ownership of their data.
A global AI powerhouse
Fireworks AI was founded by the engineers who built PyTorch – Lin Qiao, Chenyu Zhao, Dmytro Ivchenko, James Reed, Pawel Garbacki, and Benny Chen. The company specialises in high-performance inference stacks optimised for PyTorch and open-source models, offering fast, cost-effective, and scalable deployments that support over 100 cutting-edge models across text, image, audio, and multimodal formats.
Using proprietary serverless infrastructure, custom CUDA kernels, advanced model sharding, and semantic caching, Fireworks achieves inference speeds up to 12 times faster than vLLM and 40 times faster than GPT-4 benchmarks. This creates significant cost advantages over traditional cloud providers. The platform’s user-friendly design, with robust APIs, reliable performance (processing 140 billion tokens daily with 99.99% API uptime), and a subscription model, appeals to enterprises while enabling rapid AI product innovation.
Fireworks distinguishes itself from both broader hyperscalers (like AWS, Google Vertex AI, Azure OpenAI) and specialised competitors (including Hugging Face, Groq, OpenRouter, Replicate). Its focus on PyTorch, enhanced accessibility, cost efficiency, and a developer-friendly, open-innovation ecosystem strengthens its market position. Strategic partnerships with Google Cloud, NVIDIA Inception, and MongoDB further cement its unique market stance.
Instead of relying on closed, black-box APIs, Fireworks gives developers direct access to hundreds of cutting-edge open-source models across text, image, audio, and multimodal formats. From simple supervised learning to advanced reinforcement tuning, the platform lets developers replicate the sophistication once reserved for major AI labs. In 2025, it processed over 10 trillion tokens daily for more than 10,000 customers.
The next phase of AI infrastructure
By focusing on developer empowerment and open innovation, it’s positioning itself as the backbone of customisable, enterprise-grade AI. While competitors chase platform lock-ins, Fireworks is handing the torch back to builders, fueling a new era where companies can shape, tune, and scale AI entirely on their own terms.
“Our mission is to enable every business to achieve automated product and model co-design to reach maximum quality, speed, and cost-efficiency using generative AI,” said Lin Qiao, CEO and co-founder of Fireworks. “Fireworks is the only platform that delivers all three: state-of-the-art open-source models, sub-second inference at scale, and the ability to own and differentiate your AI. That’s why companies like Uber, Genspark, Retell AI, Shopify, GitLab, and so many AI Native startups have built and scaled on Fireworks.”
“We are really excited to see what we were able to achieve partnering with Fireworks,” said Kay Zhu, co-founder and CTO at Genspark. “Fireworks enabled us to own our AI journey and unlock better quality in just four weeks. This resulted in a better user experience for our customers.”
