Insurance companies face an urgent need to keep pace with shifting risks and emerging technologies, particularly amid climate change and digital transformation. Recognising this, Munich Re launched its venture arm with a significant $1.2 billion fund, backing nearly 100 startups, including Hippo, Augury, and Next Insurance, the latter of which Munich Re acquired for $2.6 billion.

Despite this, the company has decided to close the standalone venture unit, according to industry reports. Munich Re Ventures has spent the last ten years navigating the complex challenge of driving innovation within a traditional insurance giant.

Jacqueline LeSage founded and led the unit with a clear purpose: to find and foster startups capable of shaping the future of risk management and insurance. Her mission was about seeding a culture of innovation within the insurer that embraced disruptive technologies early on.

Munich Re Ventures set itself apart through its sector expertise and specialised investments. By focusing on areas such as insurtech platforms, AI-driven machine health diagnostics, and new underwriting models, it offered startups much more than money. The team provided valuable industry insights, strategic partnerships, and a pathway to scale.

Looking forward, Munich Re will wind down the venture unit by mid-2026, shifting portfolio oversight to MEAG, its asset management branch. A slimmed-down team will remain in place to support current holdings and entrepreneurs, but innovation will increasingly come from within the core business lines.

Munich Re will still participate in selected co-investments through MEAG, signalling a thoughtful recalibration rather than a full pullback.
