Italian astronautical engineer and deep-tech founder Bianca Cefalo wants to make sure spacecraft don’t fly blind anymore. Her London-based startup Space DOTS has raised $1.5 million in seed funding to bring real-time orbital intelligence to satellite operators, giving them the ability to detect and attribute both natural and human-made threats in space.
The round was led by Female Founders Fund, with participation from Feel Ventures, UK-based angel investors, and General Electric Company Ltd (GEC), which is also coming onboard as a strategic partner.
Founded in 2022, Space DOTS is building what it calls “Space Environmental Intelligence,” a missing data layer for spacecraft operating in increasingly contested orbits. Its flagship platform, SKY-I, fuses data from Space DOTS’ proprietary in-orbit sensors (DATA DOTS) with external datasets to transform historically inaccessible orbital data into predictive insights.
“Space is no longer a neutral domain. Storms from the Sun and interference from rivals can look indistinguishable,” said Cefalo, CEO and co-founder of Space DOTS. “If Palantir became synonymous with centralized terrestrial intelligence, Space DOTS is building its decentralised counterpart in orbit, fusing in-situ data with external sources to help civil and defence partners harden spacecraft, attribute threats, and preserve freedom of action in contested orbits.”
Solving the “invisible threat” problem
Spacecraft today face more than radiation and solar storms. Non-kinetic hostile interference such as signal jamming or spoofing can mimic natural space weather, leaving operators uncertain whether anomalies are accidental or intentional. Without proper attribution, these incidents are often dismissed as “just space weather,” leaving critical systems vulnerable.
SKY-I acts as the missing intelligence layer, enabling satellite operators to detect, interpret, and attribute these threats in real time, strengthening deterrence and enhancing resilience across civilian and defense operations.
A fast-growing deep-tech player
In just two years, Space DOTS has:
- Launched DATA DOT 1 (Jan 14, 2025) aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-12 into a sun-synchronous low-Earth orbit, gathering critical environmental data from a highly eccentric trajectory.
- Become an approved supplier to Airbus Defence and Space.
- Formed a strategic partnership with GEC to build the UK’s first cislunar Space Environmental Intelligence infrastructure, supporting autonomous operations around the Moon. This marks the first privately-led deep-space mission spearheaded by a woman.
- Secured over £50 million in letters of intent, with support from the UK Met Office and Five Eyes allies.
“Bianca is an iconic founder, one of the few female astronautical engineers and the youngest Italian analyst on NASA/JPL’s InSight mission,” said Anu Duggal, founding partner at Female Founders Fund. “Space DOTS is transforming raw in-orbit data into mission-critical intelligence that reduces operational risk. This could redefine how spacecraft are designed and defended.”
Scaling for the Moon and beyond
With its fresh funding, Space DOTS plans to grow its London and U.S. teams, accelerate AI-powered SaaS development for SKY-I, and prepare its next-generation DATA DOTS for geostationary (GEO) and cislunar missions.
As geopolitical tensions extend from VLEO to the Moon and beyond, Space DOTS wants to become the category-defining leader for dual-use space environmental intelligence, enabling safer design, faster attribution, and more resilient space operations.
