Managing a fragmented data stack, putting together Snowflake, Fivetran, and business intelligence platforms, usually requires a full data engineering team and big budgets just to extract business insights. Definite, a Wilmington, Delaware-based startup founded in 2024, is changing the landscape.
In a conversation with TFN, Mike Ritchie, CEO and founder of Definite, a Wilmington, Delaware-based startup founded in 2024, explains this pain from personal experience: “I’ve been a practitioner and founder in the space for 20 years and saw how painful it was for myself and my customers. You have to buy and stitch together a warehouse, ETL, BI, and a modelling layer just to answer basic business questions.”
Today, the company has raised an oversubscribed $10 million seed round led by Costanoa Ventures, with participation from Acrew Capital and strategic angel investors, with valuation not being disclosed to TFN.
The story behind Definite
Mike Ritchie, CEO and founder of Definite, brings nearly two decades of industry experience to the table and is no stranger to the frustration companies face in assembling data stacks.
His previous start-up, SeekWell, which specialised in data activation, was acquired by a major business intelligence platform, informing his approach with Definite.
Ritchie adds, “Definite’s founding team brings deep experience in data infrastructure, SaaS, and AI. We’ve all lived the pain of managing sprawling data stacks and saw the opportunity to create a unified, AI-native alternative.”
He underscores that two key technological shifts made Definite possible: the maturation of large language models in writing SQL, and advances in open-source data infrastructure.
A unified AI-native platform powered by open source
At the core of Definite’s offering is an assistant called Fi, which interprets user queries and automatically generates SQL statements, joins data from different sources, and provides traceable results. Ritchie describes it as “inquiry without the queries,” highlighting how it removes the need for technical expertise in day-to-day data exploration.
Definite’s platform replaces the conventional modern data stack by integrating a secure, open-source data lake, automated data pipelines, and built-in dashboards into a single product. By leveraging technologies such as DuckDB and Apache Iceberg, Definite offers enterprise-grade security with SOC 2 Type II compliance and avoids vendor lock-in. The company claims that its solution can deliver answers in minutes rather than months, at a fraction of the usual cost.
The company addresses the rising costs associated with today’s fragmented data stacks, where a typical 200-person startup spends $1.5M to $2.5M annually on tools and data team headcount, and a 500-person startup can easily spend $4M to $7.5M annually.
“Definite replaces all of that with a single AI-native platform that spins up in minutes instead of months,” says Ritchie.
What’s next?
Over the next three to five years, Definite plans to grow from dozens to hundreds of enterprise customers, expand its AI agent Fi’s capabilities beyond data analysis into engineering and data science tasks, and build a world-class team across product, engineering, sales, and customer success. The goal is to create a new category standard for AI-native analytics, much like Snowflake defined cloud data warehousing.
“Data doesn’t need to be so hard,” he concludes, as Definite aims to deliver one AI-native platform built on open standards that helps every company scale confidently and quickly, from months to minutes.
