Cockroach Labs, the company behind the cloud-native distributed SQL database CockroachDB, has just recently announced its expansion plans into the EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa) region with a new office as part of its global growth strategy. Situated in London, the office will serve as the company’s EMEA headquarters.

The company saw an increase in global demand for CockroachDB driving 600% revenue growth and a 500% increase in new customers YoY in the region. This clearly reflects its accelerated growth as well as the massive opportunity for the company to become a lead provider of cloud database services. Cockroach Labs’ last offering was a $278M Series F at a $5B valuation last year in December.

Doubling down on the EMEA region

Cockroach Labs is making significant investments in building out its EMEA operations. Besides its London HQ, the company is also planning on setting up regional offices in other European cities in the next year, initially beginning with a German base. Cockroach Labs has already made strategic sales, marketing, and customer success hires in the region, with about 160% growth in headcount across EMEA in the past year.

Moreover, the company hired Gareth Whiting as its Vice President of Sales, EMEA. Gareth is responsible for driving growth and profitability in EMEA, executing the firm’s sales strategy, and growing the team, both by size and geographical coverage. The newly hired VP spent his previous years running EMEA sales for prominent SaaS organisations Sumo Logic and Delphix. Cockroach Labs estimates that by year-end 2022, EMEA will represent 20% of the company’s overall revenue.

Crawling fast across the world

European organizations have embraced the cloud, experiencing their biggest pain point in handling the complexity of the business as well as making operational changes in data management. Additionally, data fragmentation and sovereignty issues unique to the region topped with trust issues in data management derail the process of switching to the cloud.

Founded in 2015 by Benjamin Darnell, Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball, Cockroach Labs developed its CockroachDB database from the ground up to tackle these concerns. By ensuring that data is close to customers through its geo-partitioning feature, CockroachDB tackles latency issues, assisting in mitigating compliance risks and improving database performance, thus enabling organizations to deliver optimal performance for regional and global deployments alike.

“More organizations across Europe are embracing a cloud-first mentality, building more complex data-driven applications that are rapidly becoming an imperative. Cockroach Labs has already seen tens of thousands of deployed CockroachDB clusters across our open source and free cloud offerings in the region in financial services, retail, manufacturing, and more,” said Gareth Whiting, Cockroach Labs’ EMEA Sales VP. “This represents the increasing desire to leverage or migrate to a distributed database that takes full advantage of the cloud. CockroachDB was purpose-built for this new world, and our growth over the last several years validates our leadership in this emerging market.”

Built to be elastically scalable and inherently resilient, CockroachDB is quickly becoming the ideal choice to serve the evolving needs of today’s most innovative development teams, from the smallest startups to the largest category leader. The company already has partnerships with two major cloud providers, AWS and Google. Cockroach DB is now a Google Cloud Run’s database partner. Furthermore, CockroachDB was named the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Database Management Systems, validating both the emerging distributed DBMS category and Cockroach Labs’ market momentum as an innovator within the space.

CockroachDB, supported by its cloud-native distributed SQL architecture is rapid;y becoming the transactional database of choice for innovators and category leaders bragging among its clients firms like eBay, Comcast, Mythical Games, Nubank, Starburst Data and AllSaints.
