Samsung Ventures joins IAG Capital Partners in backing Belgian startup- Swave Photonics vision for Spatial + AI Computing era

Swave Photonics, the Leuven- and Silicon Valley-based startup developing true holographic display technology, has secured an additional €6 million ($6.97 million) in follow-on Series A funding. The new capital from IAG Capital Partners, and new investor Samsung Ventures, will support commercialisation and application development of Swave’s Holographic eXtended Reality (HXR) platform.

The follow-on funding adds to Swave’s previously announced €27 million ($28.27 million) Series A round in January 2025, and brings its total raised to over €43 million including its €10 million seed round in 2023.

Swave’s HXR- Transforming Spatial + AI Computing with holography

Founded in 2022 as a spin-out from imec, Swave Photonics is building what it claims is the world’s first true holographic display platform. Its HXR technology uses diffractive photonics on CMOS chip-based technology to shape light and generate high-resolution, natural 3D images – all without the need for waveguides.

The ultra-compact pixel structure and light-shaping capability enable new kinds of immersive 3D experiences in spatial computing, unlocking potential applications in AR/VR headsets, automotive HUDs, medical imaging, and industrial visualisation systems.

Swave Photonics CEO Mike Noonen said, “This follow-on investment demonstrates that there is tremendous excitement for the emerging Spatial + AI Computing era, and the display technology that will help unlock what comes next. These funds from our existing investor IAG Capital Partners and new investor Samsung Ventures will help Swave accelerate the commercialisation and application of our novel holographic display technology at the heart of next-generation spatial computing platforms.”

Industry recognition and path to scale

Swave’s HXR platform was recently recognised with a CES 2025 Innovation Award and named a semi-finalist for the Electro Optic Photonics Frontiers Award. Its approach to holography – leveraging CMOS chip fabrication – provides a cost-effective, scalable manufacturing process, offering a swift path to mass production.

The new investment will help expand go-to-market efforts and fuel ongoing R&D.

About Swave Photonics
