For decades, writers have struggled for space and revenue within a landscape controlled by large publishing houses, advertising platforms, and complex middlemen. Making money from their work, building a loyal audience, and maintaining content ownership often seemed impossible for independent creators. Enter Substack, a pioneering platform transforming how writers connect with their fans and, importantly, get paid.

Substack directly addresses these issues with a straightforward, elegant platform that enables anyone to create a paid (or free) newsletter, handle subscriptions, and communicate directly with readers. By emphasising paid subscriptions over advertising, Substack allows writers to earn a living doing what they love, with unprecedented independence and control.

In its most recent Series C funding round, led by Bond and The Chernin Group, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, as well as notable investors such as Rich Paul (Klutch Sports Group) and Jens Grede (Skims), Substack secured $100 million. This funding has boosted the company’s valuation beyond $1.1 billion, granting it unicorn status and signalling a new chapter for independent publishing.

Founders with a clear mission

Substack’s inspiring mission arises from the varied backgrounds and shared vision of its founders. Chris Best, former CTO and co-founder of Kik Messenger, partnered with Hamish McKenzie, a former Tesla lead writer and journalist, and Jairaj Sethi, an experienced technologist dedicated to product engineering. They believed writers deserved more control, improved business models, and true ownership of their audiences.

What began as a response to the limitations of traditional publishing has evolved into a significant movement. The founders aim to transform the writer’s business for the digital era by providing creators with tools to succeed and freeing them from the long-standing control of middlemen. Their goal, “to help writers go independent and earn a living doing what they love,” influences every product choice, feature, and investment.

What sets Substack apart? Power to the creators

Substack’s platform combines simplicity with power. It provides easy-to-use publishing tools that enable writers to start newsletters with both paid and free subscription options, without requiring technical skills or design experience. Built-in payment systems make monetisation straightforward, and a detailed analytics dashboard helps writers track growth.

Unlike traditional platforms where content can get lost in algorithms and revenue pools, Substack offers authors genuine ownership and control over their work. They retain their email lists and direct contact with subscribers, and can take their audience with them if they leave. Features like comment threads and moderation tools support community building and loyal subscriber engagement.

Substack stands out with its focus on subscriptions. Unlike competitors like Medium, which pool earnings or restrict access to data, Substack empowers writers with control over their data and revenue, fostering independence and sustainability.

Fueling the future for writers

With a $100 million fundraising round led by Bond and The Chernin Group, along with its unicorn valuation, Substack is more ambitious than ever. The company aims to enhance support for writers, helping both new and seasoned authors expand their audience and increase their income.

Upcoming product developments include new community features and enhanced podcasting tools, all intended to enrich the creator experience. Additionally, Substack plans to expand internationally, with multi-language options on the way, striving to make independent publishing accessible worldwide.

Above all, the platform remains dedicated to being an open ecosystem, allowing writers to take their content, subscribers, and business elsewhere if they choose to do so. In a digital landscape dominated by platform dependence and shifting algorithms, Substack believes that focusing on empowerment and ownership will be key to its success.
