Modern defence is shaped by software, simulations, and autonomous systems operating in places where humans can’t go. In areas without GPS or reliable communications, traditional aircraft depend on human pilots who might be out of reach or in danger.

Brothers Brandon Tseng and Ryan Tseng, along with Andrew Reiter, started Shield AI in 2015 to fill this gap. Today, the San Diego-based company raised a $1.5 billion Series G round at a $12.7 billion valuation, with Advent International leading and JPMorgan Chase’s Security and Resiliency Initiative as a co-lead.

The startup also secured $500 million in preferred equity from Blackstone, which committed an additional $250 million in a delayed-draw facility.

Some of the funds will be used to acquire Aechelon Technology, a defence software company. Aechelon’s high-quality simulation platform helps train pilots and autonomous systems before real flights.

Shield AI’s main product, Hivemind, is the world’s first autonomous AI pilot that has been used continuously in combat since 2018. It’s designed specifically for DDIL environments, which means disconnected, degraded, intermittent, or low-bandwidth conditions.

Unlike traditional autopilots, Hivemind operates without GPS or communication links, relying on onboard sensors and AI reasoning. Direct competitors include Anduril Industries, AeroVironment, Skydio, and Helsing.

Shield AI’s plan focuses on three main goals: expanding Hivemind worldwide, improving the Aechelon simulation system, and launching the X-BAT, a VTOL stealth fighter drone that doesn’t need a runway, can be deployed from ships, and is fully piloted by Hivemind.
