European startups and scale-ups have long struggled with fragmented finance systems, juggling multiple bank accounts, expense tools, payroll services, and accounting platforms. Despite advances in fintech, many still rely on time-consuming manual processes or costly accountants to keep things afloat. Seapoint, a fintech startup based in Dublin, is tackling this problem head-on with a unified financial platform designed specifically for venture-backed startups and mid-market companies.
The company just announced the close of a $3 million pre-seed funding round led by Frontline Ventures, with participation from Tapestry VC and seasoned fintech veterans, including former COOs from Stripe, Revolut, Tide, and Tines.
After nine months of intensive development, Seapoint is now operating in private beta with several startups already onboard. The beta program is open to startups across the UK and Europe.
Born from the founder’s frustrations
Sean Mullaney, Seapoint’s founder and CEO, draws on his extensive background as European CIO at Stripe and CTO of AI unicorn Algolia. Speaking to TFN about the challenges startups often encounter, Mullaney shared an example from a fellow founder who told him, “I had a £600,000 cheque and nobody would take my money.”
This stark reality inspired him to build a platform that would address fundamental banking challenges faced by early-stage companies. Over the past year, conversations with more than 50 founders reinforced the urgent need for a better solution.
Seapoint’s mission is clear: “We’re building the financial home for startups. Where today’s tools are fragmented, we unify. Where workflows are manual, we automate. And where banks are hostile, we stand with founders.”
The founding team combines fintech expertise honed at Stripe and Tide with a founder-first mindset. This background helps Seapoint focus on the underserved niche of startups “too big for neobanks and too small for corporate banking.” According to the company, no direct competitors have yet addressed this space as comprehensively.
More than just automation
While challengers like N26, Revolut, and Tide have made fintech mainstream, their focus generally skews towards consumers and very small businesses. Seapoint distinguishes itself by targeting mid-market startups that are too sizeable for neobanks but neglected by traditional corporate banks.
Seapoint’s platform aggregates bank accounts, integrates with Gmail for invoice processing, and connects to accounting and CRM systems, giving founders a real-time, unified view of their finances. Its AI handles bulk invoice payments, payroll batch runs, expense categorisation, and VAT calculations, slashing hours of menial work down to moments.
As Mullaney put it, “Seapoint is broader and more powerful than traditional banking. It puts founders back in control of their finances.”
But automation alone isn’t enough. Seapoint complements its AI capabilities with dedicated relationship managers who understand the unique complexities of startup finance, including venture capital fund structures, runway challenges, and Delaware C-Corp requirements. “You get a real human who actually cares, not a chatbot,” Mullaney emphasised.
Will Prendergast, Partner at Frontline Ventures, says: “Neobanks have built great products for consumers, but mid-market companies have more complex needs that aren’t yet properly served. With a deeply experienced fintech team, Seapoint is leveraging recent advances in AI to transform the finance stack and solve this tedious issue for all scaling companies.”Early users confirm the platform’s value.
Luke Mackey, co-founder and CEO of employee benefits startup Kota, shared, “I finally have a bird’s-eye view of my finances, and am better able to make decisions for the business. Seapoint is an immediate win when it comes to managing cards & expenses, paying invoices and running payroll: we used to have multiple vendors for this, now it’s all in one place.”
