OpenAI rival Anthropic to close $3.5B funding at $61.5B valuation: 5 recent announcements you should know

A prominent Gen AI player and a rival to Open AI, Anthropic is all set to complete a $3.5 billion funding round at a valuation of $61.5 billion, according to Bloomberg. This is a larger funding round than the company initially planned to raise. This information comes at a time when Elon Musk’s xAI is seeking to close $10 billion and OpenAI is in discussion to raise as much as $40 billion at $340 billion valuation

The report added that Lightspeed Venture Partners initially facilitated Anthropic’s efforts to raise $2 billion at the beginning of the year. The funding target was subsequently increased to $3.5 billion due to oversubscription, reflecting strong market interest in the company. Potential investors in this round include Menlo Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, General Catalyst, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Google is set to invest over $1 billion into Anthropic marking a significant expansion of its involvement in the AI sector. This new investment adds to Google’s existing $2 billion commitment to Anthropic, bringing its total investment to over $3 billion.

With previous funding rounds supported by the likes of Google, Spark Capital, and Sam Bankman-Fried’s ventures, Anthropic raised $580 million in 2022, followed by a massive $580 million Series C in 2023, catapulting its valuation into unicorn status.

Anthropic’s rise amidst fierce competition  

The AI industry has entered a new era of competition following OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. OpenAI’s rapid growth and continuous product innovation have propelled it to a staggering $6.6 billion funding round, potentially pushing its valuation to $157 billion. In response, tech giants like Google and Amazon are doubling down on AI investments to secure their dominance in this fast-evolving space.  

However, these high-stakes investments have drawn regulatory scrutiny. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has launched an investigation into Google’s partnership with Anthropic, citing concerns over market competition. This reflects the increasing regulatory pressure on major tech firms as they expand their AI ambitions.  

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives and siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has positioned itself as a leader in AI safety and ethical AI development. Its flagship model, Claude, directly competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, gaining recognition for its focus on transparency and controllability in generative AI.

  • Released its most intelligent model: Anthropic has developed the Claude family of large language models (LLMs), named after AI pioneer Claude Shannon. The latest iteration, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, was released recently. Touted to be its most intelligent model to date, Claude 3.7 Sonnet is a hybrid reasoning model, producing near-instant responses or extended, step-by-step thinking. 
  • AI-powered coding assistant: Alongside Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Anthropic introduced a research preview of Claude Code, an AI tool designed to assist developers directly from their terminals. Claude Code can search, edit, test, and perform other coding-related tasks, streamlining the development process and reducing the time required for complex coding challenges.
  • AI agents for task automation: Anthropic is developing AI agents capable of automating routine computer tasks, positioning themselves in direct competition with tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI. These agents can actively manipulate software and complete complex workflows with minimal human oversight, enhancing productivity and efficiency in business environments. 
  • Anthropic Economic Index: To understand AI’s integration into real-world tasks, Anthropic launched the Anthropic Economic Index.
