Norwegian startup Installer raises seed funding to accelerate renewable tech installations across Europe, streamlining deployment and maintenance of EV chargers, solar panels, and heat pumps with AI-driven solutions.
As wildfires blaze across the U.S. and floods wreak havoc in Europe, the urgency for climate action has reached a critical point. In response to these escalating threats, Norwegian startup Installer has secured a $4M seed funding round to revolutionise renewable tech installations and maintenance. Led by Brighteye Ventures, with participation from PT1, Futurum, and Sondo, this investment aims to streamline the deployment of EV chargers, solar panels, and heat pumps, cutting operational costs for businesses while creating new job opportunities for skilled installers. Installer’s mission is clear: to remove barriers, speed up renewable adoption, and drive the world towards a sustainable future.
“Our mission is to speed up the deployment of renewable technologies by eliminating hurdles,” says Installer CEO Gunnar Windsand Sem. “We provide companies with instant access to skilled installers, allowing them to scale fast and cost-efficiently.”
Overcoming roadblocks to renewable tech installations
While climate technology continues to advance, installation remains a major bottleneck. More than 70% of customers consider installation an integral part of their experience yet delays and inefficiencies persist. Installer’s AI-driven platform acts as the backend infrastructure for renewable tech installations, optimising job distribution, training, and customer interactions.
By leveraging smart job dispatch and tailored workflows, the platform enhances collaboration between manufacturers and installers, ensuring seamless customer experiences. The built-in AI not only reduces the workload for installers but also ensures they receive the right training, addressing a common challenge in the sector.
Leading the renewable tech installations charge
Based in Oslo, Installer was founded in 2022 by Norwegian entrepreneurs Kristoffer Gjerde, Thomas Kristiansen, and Gunnar Windsand Sem. With extensive backgrounds in technology, business development, and renewable energy, the trio identified a critical gap in the industry—efficient, scalable renewable tech installation services.
Strategic partnerships shaping the future
Despite operating in stealth mode until now, Installer has already forged key partnerships with industry leaders across 21 markets. The company collaborates with Easee, Europe’s top home EV charging provider; Sungrow, a $10B global leader in photovoltaic systems and battery technology; Coop, Norway’s largest heat pump provider, installing over 10,000 units annually; and Tibber, a major European energy provider and renewable hardware innovator.
Jonas Helmikstøl, Co-Founder and former CEO of Easee, previously highlighted the challenge on the Shifter podcast: “What differentiates Easee from Apple is that we not only have to manufacture amazing products but also ensure that the installation goes smoothly; otherwise, our customers won’t have a great purchasing experience.”
By collaborating with major renewable technology companies, Installer is setting the stage for faster, more efficient climate tech adoption.
Scaling up and expanding internationally
With a 17-strong team drawn from leading companies like Kahoot!, Oda, McKinsey, Tesla, and Easee, Installer is preparing for rapid expansion. The fresh funding will support its growth into key European markets, including Scandinavia, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and France.
Looking ahead, Installer is also targeting the U.S. market, where interest in renewable technologies is on the rise. In May 2024, the company was selected to present to climate tech investors and industry leaders in Silicon Valley, marking a significant step towards international growth.
“Being selected to present in Silicon Valley was a significant milestone,” notes Sem. “The U.S. is on the cusp of a renewable surge, and we’re excited to contribute to that momentum, especially as policy changes could further accelerate adoption.”
Driving impact through collaboration
Installer recognises that achieving net-zero emissions requires industry-wide cooperation. By simplifying the renewable tech installation process, reducing delays, and enhancing customer experiences, the company is removing barriers that have long hindered the adoption of renewable technologies.
