  • The Hamburg-based company Rabot Energy has secured $50 million in Series B funding, led by Endeit Capital.
  • Rabot Energy grew its customer base from 35,000 in January 2024 to more than 200,000.
  • The company’s goal is to reach one million customers by connecting home batteries into a virtual power plant.

Rabot Energy, a Hamburg climate tech startup, just raised $50 million in Series B, led by Endeit Capital, to turn home batteries into a virtual power plant. Germany’s DeepTech & Climate Fonds and existing investors HV, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Bosch Ventures, CNI, Acurio Ventures, and vent.io also took part.

In Rabot’s system, batteries charge when renewable energy is abundant and discharge when it is scarce, allowing the company to group them into a virtual power plant. As of October 2025, Rabot had about 135 employees in Hamburg, Munich, and Berlin.

“The next generation of power plants will not be built; it will be connected. Millions of households have enormous untapped potential to do more than simply consume energy and instead become an active part of the wider energy system,” says Jan Rabe, CEO of Rabot Energy.

The new funds will help it reach one million customers, expand services for homes and businesses in Germany, and connect more devices like home batteries, electric vehicle chargers, and heat pumps.

From switching service to energy supplier

Before founding Rabot Energy, Rabe studied physics in Munich, worked in finance and energy trading in Switzerland, and later earned a master’s in sustainable development in Madrid. He and Maximilian Both first launched Wechselpilot, a service that helped customers switch tariffs. When prices spiked in late 2021, the business suffered.

Rabot Charge, now called Rabot Energy, was their third energy company, funded with their own money. Both still manage Wechselpilot as a sister company.

Rabot Flow, launched in June 2026, is the company’s product supporting the virtual power plant concept. It combines a dynamic tariff, a smart meter, and a plug-in battery.

The company says it can lower average household energy costs by 15%. The battery is delivered in three days, plugs into a regular socket, and can be set up in the app in less than two minutes. It doesn’t need rooftop solar, so renters can use it too.

Rabot raised outside funding in stages. By April 2023, it had secured €4.5 million in pre-seed and seed rounds. HV led a €17.5 million Series A in January 2024, and Bosch Ventures joined in July 2025 for an undisclosed amount.

From 35,000 to 200,000 customers

Rabot’s main strength has been its customer growth. The company had over 35,000 customers at its Series A in January 2024 and passed 100,000 when Bosch Ventures invested in July 2025.

Now, it has more than 200,000 customers, including about 15,000 business clients, and has supplied over 600 million kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity.

Rabot says it has €200 million in revenue. As of October 2025, the company aimed for over €100 million in revenue for 2025 and more than 300,000 customers by the end of 2026. The company also claims its customers saved €45 million in 2025 compared to default supplier tariffs, based on its own calculations.

“The energy transition in Germany is reaching a point where flexibility is becoming just as important as expanding renewable energy. Rabot is creating the conditions to actively involve millions of households: they help stabilise the power grid while benefiting from the flexibility they provide. Jan Rabe and his team have built a profitable core business and developed the technology to intelligently manage electricity demand at scale,” said Sara Resvik, partner at Endeit.

“Rabot Energy is addressing a key challenge of the energy transition: with innovative energy tariffs and an intelligent energy management platform, the company enables households to benefit from the dynamics of an increasingly volatile energy market. Jan and his team immediately convinced me with their ambitious vision, outstanding execution and relentless commitment,” added Dr Anne Hinze, senior investment manager at the DTCF.

Smart meter shortages and a crowded market

In 2024, Rabot, Octopus Energy, Tibber and Ostrom launched the Smart Meter Initiative to speed up the installation process. TFN stated that metiundo, a smart meter operator based in Berlin, raised €40 million from Octopus Energy Generation in February 2026. Rabot’s tariff can also be used without a smart meter if customers enter their monthly readings via the app, as stated on its website.

Other companies in the sector also have strong funding. Tibber raised $65 million in Series B funding in 2020. Ostrom secured €20 million in June 2025, led by Eneco Ventures, claims to run Germany’s largest virtual power plant, and plans to help customers get smart meters. Kraken, Octopus Energy’s software, raised $1 billion at an $8.65 billion valuation. Hamburg-based 1KOMMA5° raised €70 million at a $1.35 billion valuation.

While Ostrom invests in smart meters, Rabot has chosen a plug-in battery solution that works for renters without rooftop solar. Tech Funding News’ list of 18 European energy tech startups shows the market’s intense competition.

Virtual power plants to reach over $9 billion by 2030, with Western Europe making up $3.7 billion.

Rabot claims that households can take an active part in the power system. To do this, the company must increase its customer base fivefold in a market in which only 5.9% of metering points are smart, and it must prove that its batteries, sold at cost price, generate income from grid services rather than merely from reduced bills.
