OpenAI’s new GPT-4o mini slashes costs and tackles text, code, and beyond

OpenAI, a leading research lab in artificial intelligence, has taken a significant step towards democratising AI with the introduction of GPT-4o mini. This new, cost-efficient small model boasts superior performance compared to its predecessors while being significantly cheaper to use.

Traditionally, large language models (LLMs) like GPT-3 have been expensive to run, limiting their accessibility for many developers. OpenAI positions GPT-4o mini as a game-changer, offering a cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications.

Priced at just 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens (roughly the equivalent of processing a 2500-page book), GPT-4o mini opens doors for developers who may not have been able to afford AI integration in the past.

What exactly is GPT-4o mini?

While currently supporting text and vision functionalities, c promises future support for audio, video, and other multimodal inputs and outputs. This versatility makes it a valuable tool for developers working on a variety of projects, from chatbots with enhanced response capabilities to applications requiring analysis of visual data.

Is it smarter and more efficient?

Despite its affordability, GPT-4o mini doesn’t compromise on performance. Benchmarks show it surpasses previous small models like GPT-3.5 Turbo and OpenAI’s competitors, Anthropic’s Claude Haiku and Google AI’s Gemini Flash. GPT-4o mini excels in tasks involving reasoning, demonstrating superior capabilities in areas like mathematical problem-solving and code generation. The model also outperforms its predecessors in tasks requiring long-context comprehension.

OpenAI’s commitment to responsible AI

OpenAI emphasises its commitment to responsible AI development. Safety measures are ingrained throughout the model’s creation process, including filtering training data to prevent the incorporation of harmful content and utilising reinforcement learning with human feedback to ensure accurate and reliable responses. Furthermore, GPT-4o mini incorporates an “instruction hierarchy” designed to resist attempts to manipulate the model’s behaviour.
