OpenAI is preparing to launch a new AI-driven hiring platform around mid-2026, as part of its ongoing push to expand beyond ChatGPT. The platform, announced by OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, promises to rethink how employers find talent and how candidates are matched to jobs, moving away from traditional resumes and job titles toward a focus on actual skills and demonstrated AI fluency.

This venture places OpenAI directly in competition with LinkedIn, which has been the go-to platform for professional networking and hiring for over a decade. The relationship is layered: LinkedIn was co-founded by Reid Hoffman, an early investor in OpenAI, while Microsoft, OpenAI’s most prominent financial backer, owns LinkedIn.

The OpenAI Jobs Platform is designed to serve a diverse range of employers, including large corporations, small businesses, and local governments. A key differentiator is its emphasis on AI capability, enabling companies to identify candidates with concrete expertise in artificial intelligence and related technologies.

Integral to this approach is OpenAI Academy, a certification initiative designed to enhance AI skills in the workforce. The company plans to launch a pilot certification program late this year to scale rapidly.

Beyond hiring, OpenAI has indicated ambitions to develop other AI-powered tools, such as a browser and social applications.

Industry watchers view OpenAI’s move as a timely response to the mounting demand for AI skills amid rapid technological shifts in the labour market. The platform aims to help workers adapt to the AI era by gaining certifications and transitioning into roles where AI fluency is critical.

That said, OpenAI faces a steep challenge. LinkedIn’s massive user base, entrenched network effects, and integration with Microsoft’s ecosystem give it a considerable advantage. Success will hinge on OpenAI’s ability to attract users, deliver accurate AI-powered job matches, and scale its certification programs effectively.
