Lambda, a leading provider of GPU-powered cloud infrastructure for AI, has announced a $480 million Series D investment. The round was co-led by Andra Capital and SGW, with additional participation from Nvidia, Andrej Karpathy, ARK Invest, Fincadia Advisors, G Squared, In-Q-Tel (IQT), KHK & Partners, and others. The funding underscores the growing demand for advanced AI computing solutions as industries race to adopt generative AI and large language models (LLMs).

The financing also included participation from Industrial Development Funding, with Lazard serving as exclusive financial adviser and placement agent. This arrangement follows Lambda’s $320 million funding round in February 2024, led by billionaire Thomas Tull’s US Innovative Technology fund. It could value the company at over $4 billion.

The new investment will help Lambda expand both its infrastructure and software offerings, including its Cloud Platform. The funding aims to accelerate innovation, enabling AI developers to train, fine-tune, and deploy models with greater speed and efficiency.

Lambda would continue enhancing Lambda Chat, which currently hosts DeepSeek-R1 and numerous other open-source models. This focus on open-source reasoning aligns with its vision of democratising access to advanced AI tools and fostering collaboration across the global developer community.

Innovation and product evolution

Founded in 2012 by twin brothers Stephen Balaban and Michael Balaban in San Jose, Lambda initially built an internal GPU cloud to power its AI image-editing products. By 2017, the company introduced the Lambda Quad Deep Learning GPU workstation and the Lambda Blade GPU server, branding it the world’s first plug-and-play deep learning supercomputer priced under $20,000.

In 2018, the company launched the Lambda GPU Cloud and Stack, an AI software repository aimed at simplifying model development. By 2024, Lambda advanced further with its 1-Click Clusters, providing AI developers instant access to Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPU clusters equipped with InfiniBand networking.

This track record of innovation has positioned Lambda as a trusted provider of scalable, high-performance GPU solutions in a market facing unprecedented demand.

Affordable GPU cloud services

Lambda has positioned itself as one of the most cost-efficient GPU cloud providers worldwide. The company offers Nvidia H100s with 3,200 Gbps of InfiniBand at just $1.89 per hour, undercutting traditional cloud giants. Its portfolio spans on-premises GPU hardware as well as hosted GPUs in the cloud, serving more than 5,000 customers across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, financial services, and the U.S. government.

As a leading Nvidia processor provider, Lambda offers rapid access to the latest GPU architectures. These resources support training, fine-tuning, and inference for advanced AI workloads, including generative AI and LLMs.

Securing financing amid GPU shortages

The AI industry’s rapid expansion has created a global shortage of GPUs, with Nvidia chips becoming a prized asset. To meet this demand, Lambda secured a $500 million loan from lenders, including Macquarie Group, using Nvidia GPUs as collateral. This financing, structured as a “special purpose GPU financing vehicle,” is an asset-based arrangement supported by Lambda’s cash flow.

The loan will allow Lambda to acquire Nvidia’s next-generation chips, including the H200 and Blackwell series—B200 and GB200. Notably, the B200 chip is priced between $30,000 and $40,000, reflecting the growing cost and value of high-performance GPUs. Nvidia had previously announced that Lambda would be among the first cloud providers to offer access to its H200 chips.

Position in a competitive AI market

The surge in private investment into AI infrastructure reflects the towering demand for chips and platforms capable of supporting increasingly complex workloads. Companies across industries are competing to develop generative AI solutions, intensifying the need for GPU-driven compute power. With its combination of affordable GPU access, expanding cloud services, and partnerships with Nvidia, Lambda is well-positioned to remain a key enabler of the global AI ecosystem.

“We’ll build more software tools that delight AI developers and deploy more GPUs to meet the massive customer demand,” said Lambda CEO and co-founder Stephen Balaban in a blog post regarding his new $480 million investment plans. “The AI revolution is in full swing, and Lambda is here to power it.”
