OpenAI’s €860B round nears: Nvidia leads with $30B as chip recycling loop tightens

NVIDIA is close to finalising a $30 billion investment in OpenAI as part of a mega fundraising round that could exceed $100 billion, according to a source familiar with the matter.

If completed, the round would value OpenAI at approximately $830 billion, placing it among the most valuable private companies globally and marking one of the largest private capital raises in history.

OpenAI is expected to use a significant portion of the fresh funds to purchase NVIDIA chips, hardware that underpins both model training and real-time deployment at scale, according to Reuters.

In other words, NVIDIA may be investing billions into OpenAI, and OpenAI may be recycling much of that capital back into NVIDIA’s hardware stack.

The strategic layer behind the cheque

NVIDIA is OpenAI’s most critical hardware supplier. Its GPUs power the training and deployment of large-scale AI models, including the systems behind ChatGPT. By taking a direct equity stake, Nvidia would deepen an already symbiotic relationship, moving from supplier to strategic shareholder, says Reuters.

The investment reportedly replaces an earlier structure announced in September, under which NVIDIA had committed up to $100 billion to support OpenAI’s chip purchases for data centres.

That agreement took longer than expected to finalise, and the structure has now evolved, according to the source.

Who else is in?

Reuters previously reported that SoftBank Group and Amazon are also likely to participate in the round.

The presence of these players signals something larger: the AI ecosystem is consolidating capital among infrastructure giants, cloud providers and model developers. Strategic alliances are becoming as important as technical breakthroughs.

OpenAI’s valuation at $830 billion places it at the centre of the global AI scene. At the same time, NVIDIA is strengthening its role as a key player by providing computing power and gaining influence over companies that need these resources.

This funding round reflects a broader market trend. The competition in AI is about controlling chips, data centres, funding, and strategic partnerships.
