As Hollywood studios and brand agencies seek scalable yet compliant AI video tools, Moonvalley is positioning itself as a leading platform offering both cinematic quality and legal security.

Its flagship product, Marey, is an AI video generator that enables creators to produce high-resolution videos with extensive creative control while avoiding legal issues that plague other models. Marey is trained solely on fully licensed content, providing studio clients and enterprise brands peace of mind amid the rising number of copyright lawsuits against generative AI platforms.

Today, the startup announced an additional $84 million in funding, led by General Catalyst with participation from CAA, Comcast Ventures, CoreWeave, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator. This brings Moonvalley’s total funding to $154 million, making it one of the best-funded players in the growing AI-powered filmmaking industry.

Why is Moonvalley built for the creators?

Moonvalley was founded on the belief that responsible generative AI can enhance creativity. CEO and co-founder Naeem Talukdar brings a global perspective, with experience spanning over 100 countries and expertise in engineering, storytelling, and media. His co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Mateusz Malinowski, is a prominent AI researcher from DeepMind, known for his pioneering work in visual intelligence.

The founders asked a simple yet powerful question: What if generative media tools were explicitly designed for storytellers, such as filmmakers, writers, and directors, rather than just AI enthusiasts?

This vision led to Asteria, Moonvalley’s in-house creative production studio that works directly with industry experts to guide product development. This collaborative approach ensures each Marey feature integrates seamlessly into real-world storytelling workflows.

Naeem Talukdar explains, “Generative video is about creative amplification. We aim to equip filmmakers with new tools, without reducing their control.”

In a crowded market with competitors like Runway, Sora (OpenAI), Pika, Synthesia, and others, Moonvalley stands out through its commitment to legality and quality.

Unlike competitors that train models on scraped web data, Moonvalley takes a firm stance: Marey uses exclusively fully licensed content. This approach reassures studios concerned about intellectual property issues amid the increasing number of lawsuits.

Marey goes beyond basic generative functions by offering features typically found only in high-end production environments: frame-level control over lighting, motion, and camera work; customizable characters and objects; and soon, scene-level editing and comprehensive narrative support.

Users can create 30-second cinematic sequences with detailed guidance, placing Moonvalley among the few AI platforms designed to integrate smoothly into professional workflows. Through collaborations with creative agencies, production teams, and Hollywood talent, Moonvalley refines Marey based on actual user feedback, rather than relying solely on machine learning metrics.

What’s next for Moonvalley?

With fresh funding, Moonvalley plans to accelerate development by introducing advanced APIs for studio workflow integration, expanding its licensed content catalogue, adding requested features like lighting control and custom characters, and recruiting top talent. The company will also strengthen collaborations with filmmakers, studios, and brands to ensure Marey evolves to meet user needs.

The investor mix reflects Moonvalley’s hybrid nature: entertainment powerhouses (CAA), cloud infrastructure expertise (CoreWeave), venture capital (Khosla, General Catalyst), and strategic partners (Comcast Ventures).

As generative film technology moves from research labs to mainstream media and advertising, Moonvalley is positioned to become a key player. “Studios want control. They want quality. And above all, they want assurances that their outputs are safe,” explains Talukdar. “Moonvalley has been built as a platform where compelling stories and cutting-edge technology come together: ethically, creatively, and at scale.”

Although Moonvalley maintains a quieter profile than some flashier competitors, its core strengths, including legal soundness, visual excellence, and filmmaker focus, speak louder than any demo could.
