Monzo taps Morgan Stanley for fresh round after $5.9B valuation

Monzo Bank, the British digital lender founded in 2015 by Tom Blomfield, Jonas Huckestein, Jason Bates, Paul Rippon and Gary Dolman, is preparing a private share sale with Morgan Stanley as it looks to shore up capital and extend its growth runway before an eventual IPO.

This comes just months after Monzo raised about $620 million in a round led by CapitalG, Alphabet’s independent growth fund, and Hedosophia, valuing the bank at roughly $5.9 billion. That funding followed an employee share sale at the same valuation.

Blomfield and his co-founders built Monzo with a clear frustration at the slow, opaque structure of traditional banking. Their goal was simple: build a transparent, user-first digital bank that gives customers control of their money in real time.

Monzo now serves more than 13 million customers and reported a pretax profit of £60.4 million for the fiscal year through March 2025, up sharply from £15.4 million the year before. It’s the clearest sign yet that the once loss-making neobank has reached maturity and can compete at scale.

The technology behind Monzo remains central to its identity. Built on microservices and hosted primarily through Google Cloud, the system gives engineers the freedom to iterate quickly while maintaining stability.  Internally, Monzo’s teams use what they call the “paved road” approach, standardized development pipelines that allow rapid, monitored deployments.

Monzo’s biggest rivals include Revolut, valued around $75 billion, as well as Starling Bank, Wise, N26 and Bunq. Unlike many of these firms, Monzo has reached profitability while continuing to expand, supported by revenues from subscriptions, lending and transaction fees.

The share sale being arranged with Morgan Stanley is seen as a bridge to an eventual IPO that could value Monzo north of £6 billion, according to reports.
