Fats are among the most critical yet often overlooked components that shape the taste of food and the texture of personal care products. Swedish biotech company Melt&Marble re-engineers fats through precision fermentation to create animal-free lipid structures that mimic or even outperform conventional fats.
Today, Melt&Marble recently closed a €7.3 million Series A round led by Industrifonden, with strategic participation from Beiersdorf, Valio, Catalyze Capital, Chalmers Ventures, and the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund.
Combined with an earlier €2.5 million EIC Accelerator grant, the company’s funding over the past year totals €10 million. The capital will be used to scale production, strengthen manufacturing partnerships, and prepare for the company’s first market launches in 2026.
Fats that could be designed, not just sourced
Melt&Marble was co-founded by Dr Anastasia Krivoruchko, Dr. Florian David, and Professor Jens Nielsen from a frustration with the limitations of existing fat sources.
“Our vision has always been to deliver more sustainable, high-performance ingredients, and this round brings us significantly closer to that goal,” said Krivoruchko, CEO of Melt&Marble.
At the core of Melt&Marble is precision fermentation, a method that uses microorganisms as biological factories to produce complex fats. The company can control the molecular structure of the resulting lipids by carefully designing the metabolic pathways in these cells. Melt&Marble calls this approach its “fat design platform.”
Unlike Nourish Ingredients, Cubiq Foods, and C16 Biosciences, Melt&Marble bridges food and beauty markets, giving it access to a much broader commercial base.
What’s next?
Over the next year and a half, the company will optimise its fermentation and downstream processing operations through dedicated manufacturing partners, allowing for cost-efficient, high-volume production without heavy capital expenditure.
Its first commercial launch is scheduled for personal care applications in 2026, with food ingredients to follow soon after. Melt&Marble is also exploring entry into the U.S. market, where regulatory frameworks for precision fermentation ingredients are already advancing, opening the door to quicker commercialization.
