JotPsych raises $5M to automate admin work in behavioural health with AI-first EHR

Healthtech startup JotPsych, the creator of a leading AI-powered scribe for behavioural health, has announced a $5 million seed funding round led by Base10 Partners. The company’s mission is simple yet ambitious: eliminate administrative burden for clinicians, starting with documentation, and eventually automate the entire behavioural health workflow.

Together, they launched an AI-powered scribe designed from the ground up for behavioural health professionals. Unlike generic models or retrofitted EHRs, JotPsych’s scribe is purpose-built, responsive, and clinically attuned. In 2024, the company scaled quickly, growing over 1300% and processing nearly 1,000,000 patient encounters.

Purpose-built and deeply personalised

At the core of JotPsych’s technology is its understanding of the unique needs of behavioural health. The platform comes with 100+ behavioural health-specific note sections and full support for payer-specific standards. It offers adaptive and personalised documentation, learning how each clinician writes right down to language, structure, and tone.

The software is also deeply customisable. Clinicians can tweak pre-set templates, create new ones, or even teach the AI to follow their preferred clinical heuristics. As the founders noted to TFN, “JotPsych learns how you write. It picks up on your language, your structure, and your style over time, making documentation feel less like a task and more like a natural extension of your voice.”

It’s more than just a note-taker. JotPsych automates lab orders, intake forms, calendar updates, and patient communication, turning fragmented, manual processes into a unified and intelligent workflow. “JotPsych remembers,” the team said. “It draws from previous notes and patient history to contextualise each new visit.” The result: more accurate, cohesive documentation and reduced mental load for clinicians.

From AI scribe to agentic EHR

The funding will accelerate JotPsych’s transformation from an AI-powered scribe into the first fully agentic Electronic Health Record (EHR). As discussed with TFN, “Base10’s investment will accelerate product velocity, enabling JotPsych to hire engineering talent, ramp up research and development, and offer a more complex product to customers.”

Over the next several quarters, JotPsych plans to roll out features like automated coding and billing, intelligent scheduling, e-prescription support, and integrated intake workflows, all within a single, unified platform. The goal? To become the “spinal cord” of every clinic, orchestrating care, operations, and compliance from one intelligent system.

Despite early traction, the company is keeping financial details close. They did clarify that with a prior pre-seed round, total funding is between $5M and $5.5M.

Founders with expertise in healthcare

Founded in 2023 by Nathan Peereboom and Jackson Bierfeldt, JotPsych emerged from a mix of personal insight and glaring market need. “The idea for JotPsych came from a mix of personal insight and clear market pain. Having grown up around clinicians, Nathan had a front-row seat to the administrative burden they faced often spending more time documenting care than delivering it. Jackson had seen how far language models had advanced and recognised their untapped potential to automate those very tasks.”

Peereboom and Bierfeldt are long-time friends from the University of Chicago, and both grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, a city steeped in healthcare. Nathan’s upbringing was deeply shaped by the medical field. His mother is a nurse practitioner and his father a neuro-oncologist. Jackson’s background in psycholinguistics aligns closely with the language-heavy needs of behavioural health software. Before founding JotPsych, both had experience running consulting and service-based businesses.

This shared understanding of healthcare systems and natural language technology helped shape JotPsych’s design from the start. As the team put it, “That early vision has evolved into the dream of a purpose-built, AI-native EHR for behavioural health one that finally puts clinicians back in control of their time.”

Market need and competitive edge

Clinician burnout is a growing crisis. According to JotPsych’s customer research, 55% of clinicians spend 4+ hours per day charting, and 63% of physicians report burnout, largely due to administrative burden. Psychiatrists spend over 20% of their time on admin work, more than any other specialty.

JotPsych aims to eliminate that inefficiency. Compared to legacy EHRs like ICANotes or AdvancedMD, or AI scribes like Freed and Nabla, JotPsych stands out for being behavioural health-specific and designed to handle all admin layers, not just notes. What sets JotPsych apart is that it’s purpose-built for behavioural health, combining a modern EHR with deeply integrated AI to automate not just documentation, but the full layer of administrative workflows.

Looking ahead

As discussed with TFN, “Over the next few years, JotPsych aims to become the operating system for behavioural health practices using AI to eliminate administrative overhead and empower clinicians to focus entirely on patient care.” JotPsych hopes to become the operating system for behavioural health practices, continuing to scale with group practices and expanding its product to cover compliance, analytics, and collaborative care.

For now, the $5 million in fresh capital puts that future within reach and clinicians one step closer to focusing fully on care.

“When we launched JotPsych, our mandate was simple: slash the 4+ hours a day clinicians waste on narrative paperwork,” said CEO and Co-Founder Nathan Peereboom. “Now, with Base10’s support, we’re shifting into high gear to build the first AI EHR that streamlines every leg of the patient journey. By removing any liquidity concerns for the foreseeable future, this partnership grants us our most precious resource: focus.”

“We believe AI will transform healthcare, and JotPsych has the right team, technology, and traction to lead that charge,” said Rexhi Dollaku, General Partner at Base10 Partners. “In the next few years, there will be a landgrab among agentic EHR solutions—platforms that don’t just document care but actively orchestrate it. JotPsych is positioned to pioneer this new era.”
