IQM Quantum Computers is betting big on the future of high-performance computing with a fresh investment of more than €40 million to expand its production facility in Finland. This follows the company’s recent Series B raise of more than $300 million.

The move signals a major step toward building scalable, error-corrected quantum systems to transform industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and finance to climate science.

Supercharges quantum hardware production

The expansion will boost the development, fabrication and testing of advanced quantum processing units while increasing the assembly of full-stack quantum computers. Spanning an impressive 8,000 square metres, the upgraded facility will include a larger cleanroom area and a quantum data centre.

Once operational, the plant is expected to double IQM’s assembly capacity and produce over 30 quantum computers each year, a pace designed to match surging global demand from high-performance computing centres, research institutes and enterprises exploring real-world quantum use cases.

A roadmap toward fault-tolerant quantum computing

A major portion of the investment will go toward new cleanroom equipment focused on achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing by 2030. With better control over chip manufacturing and quality assurance, IQM aims to build processors that can correct their own errors, a critical requirement for the technology to reach commercial mass adoption.

The upgraded facility also strengthens the backbone of Europe’s quantum supply chain. By localising chip development and enhancing quality control capabilities within the region, IQM supports the EU’s long-term quantum strategy while reinforcing Europe’s technological sovereignty and competitiveness on the global stage.

Sustainability woven into the next era of computing

IQM was founded in 2018 by Jan Goetz, Mikko Möttönen, Kuan Yen Tan, and Juha Vartiainen. It  has positioned itself as Europe’s frontrunner in the quantum computing sector.

IQM is pairing technological ambition with environmental accountability. The enhanced facility will incorporate an abatement system to reduce direct emissions from production processes and transition fully to renewable district heating. It marks a meaningful stride toward building a carbon-neutral quantum factory, setting a sustainability benchmark in an industry known for intensive energy requirements.

Headquartered in Finland, IQM now employs more than 300 people across Europe, Asia and the United States. Its full-stack quantum systems and cloud-based access platform are already supporting research breakthroughs in leading supercomputing centres, universities and commercial organisations.

With this expansion, IQM is building the industrial and environmental blueprint for the future of the sector.

“This will be one of the world’s most advanced production facility for quantum computers combining assembly lines and chip production. This approach will enable us to scale up in critical areas which are essential to deliver quality, quantity, and stable, advanced solutions to the market,” said Pasi Kivinen, Vice President of Operations at IQM Quantum Computers. “The expansion is an important step to deliver next-generation quantum computers to serve our customers and also make a remarkable impact.”

“By enhancing our fabrication capabilities to produce large-scale quantum chips for error-correction technology, we will not only better serve our customers but also reinforce our leadership in superconducting quantum computing,” said Jan Goetz, Co-CEO and Co-founder of IQM.
