Inside Glovo’s Startup Campus: How Barcelona’s zero-capital ordering app is turning employees into founders

Glovo began with minimal capital, relying on little more than pitch decks and preliminary mockups. Fast-forward to 2026, and the Spanish technology unicorn has turned its Barcelona headquarters into a thriving startup engine for entrepreneurs across Southern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa, underscoring its conviction that global category leaders can emerge from any ecosystem.

Held from October 6-8 at the Yellow Park HQ in Barcelona, the fourth edition of Glovo’s Startup Campus, which Tech Funding News attended, brought together 19 startups and 33 founders and team participants from 11 countries, from Germany and Spain to Kazakhstan and Kenya. The event was hosted alongside key ecosystem partners including Endeavor Spain, Catalan growth agency ACCIÓ, BBVA Spark, Encomenda Smart Capital, and the Polish Development Fund (PFR).

Selected via regional PowerUp contests across emerging hubs, the cohort spanned AI grant matching to assistive mobility tech, united by a core premise: global tech companies can be built anywhere.

Opening the event, Glovo co-founder Sacha Michaud, shared: “When we started Glovo in Barcelona in 2015, we had to figure out the startup playbook the hard way; we learnt by doing with little resources. Today, through Startup Campus, we are proud to pay it forward as the local digital ally who brings together exceptional founders from across emerging tech ecosystems to share our learnings, connect them with great mentors and investors, and help them build resilient businesses that can scale globally.”

This flagship campus is the public tip of a broader innovation machine: grassroots regional competitions, the €30 million pre-seed vehicle Yellow, and an expansive founder ecosystem that Glovo estimates has produced over 100 alumni-led businesses.

Non-consensus growth in emerging markets

Bypassing crowded US and Western European tech hubs, Glovo deliberately expanded into high-growth markets across Southern Europe, Central Asia, and Africa.

At the foundation of this deal flow is PowerUp, a regional pitch tournament that Michaud notes has already vetted over 1,000 early-stage startups across 20 localized editions. While non-dilutive capital grants remain small — such as the €5,000 prize secured by Cluj-Napoca-based venture .lumen during Glovo Romania’s Tech Catalyst showcase — the core value lies in executive mentorship and direct insights into operational playbook scaling.

At the campus pitch final, .lumen took top honors for its AI glasses for the visually impaired, followed by Lisbon’s Granter (AI grant consulting) in second, and Spain’s Bleecker Technologies (computer vision inventory tracking) in third. “We are building technology that can be of immense use for Glovo and its customers,” noted .lumen CEO Cornel Amariei.

Synergy forms a key objective. Moroccan customer loyalty platform Tookeez identified Glovo as a pivotal strategic partner, while a Polish developer building e-commerce pricing tools said they wanted to secure a product integration.

Reflecting on Glovo’s early days, co-founder and CEO Oscar Pierre shared candid lessons from running deliveries on foot and losing a €140K pre-seed round on outsourced code that had to be scrapped and rebuilt in-house.

Pierre outlined Glovo’s enterprise strategy: engaging corporate partners until capturing over 1% of their revenue line, the threshold where a service shifts from an experiment to an indispensable operational driver.

“At that threshold, you transition from an innovation experiment into a core operational driver,” Pierre emphasised, arguing that resource scarcity ultimately fosters creative problem-solving and rigorous operational discipline.

An alumni network with big ambitions

Beyond quick-commerce dominance, Michaud sees founder creation as Glovo’s defining impact: “Glovo’s true legacy will be the massive companies built by our alumni.”

New Dealroom.co data confirms Delivery Hero as Europe’s leading founder factory. Alumni across Delivery Hero’s European brands have launched 150 startups worth €7.5B, raised €4.4B in venture capital, and created 11,000 jobs worldwide. Glovo alone accounts for 35 of these startups, valued at €461M.

Germany serves as the hub for this impact, with Berlin-based startups accounting for €4.9 billion in enterprise value and 3,700 jobs. Brand-level data reveals that foodora alumni have built 49 startups worth €2.3 billion across Europe.

This momentum powers a compounding flywheel: alumni-led startups have spawned ~80 second-generation spinouts, while 30+ Delivery Hero alumni have joined or founded 35+ VC firms, raising €7.3B since 2020. Ex-employees cite the firm’s operational prestige as pivotal when pitching top VCs or elite accelerators like Y Combinator.

REVER co-founder and Glovo alumnus Màrius Montmany noted that bringing Michaud and Pierre on board for their seed round opened doors immediately. According to Montmany, a Y Combinator partner with DoorDash roots, he turned around a difficult interview after learning of his operational background at Glovo. “That was an entry door,” he shares.

Similarly, ex-Glovo executives founded proptech marketplace Beanstock, which raised €12M Series A funding in 2022.

Dedicated venture funds reinforce this ecosystem

Established in late 2023 by Michaud, Pierre, and former Atomico investor Adam Lasri, pre-seed firm Yellow deploys a €30 million fund, issuing initial checks from €200,000 to €500,000 across Southern Europe and CEE.

Co-investment networks expand the funding pool. Endeavor’s Catalyst fund invested $104.3 million in European tech startups by mid-2026, following its $320 million Fund V close in October.

The primary test for Glovo’s ecosystem is funnelling venture backing to emerging markets as quickly as connections take root. As Pierre concludes: “Founders in London or San Francisco aren’t smarter or harder working than those in Barcelona, Casablanca, or Moldova — talent is equal everywhere.”
