A young German AI startup Black Forest Labs, which helps Elon Musk’s Grok produce images, is making waves, with Bloomberg has reported that it plans to secure $200 million in funding. The round is said to be led by venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) that recently backed 11x and Valon.
Before this, the startup raised $31 million in seed funding during its launch in August 2024. The investment came from Brendan Iribe, a co-founder of Oculus Rift, and Garry Tan, the head of the startup incubator Y Combinator. General Catalyst also participated in a follow-up deal but the amount remains undisclosed amount.

The latest financing round would take the valuation of Black Forest Labs to over $1 billion, making it a unicorn without months of its launch. However, the report notes that the amount is subject to change.
