France-based Sonio raises €10M to improve health of women and children through AI

France-based Sonio raises €10M to improve health of women

In the US and Europe, one in every thirty-three newborns has birth defects. The fact that the defects were missed during the ultrasound in 50% of cases highlights the complexity of prenatal medicine.

Sonio aims to address this problem by providing prenatal healthcare professionals with access to a variety of medical, imaging, genetic, and environmental data in order to enhance prenatal screening and diagnosis.

Paris-based Sonio has raised €10M through the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, a fund that aids deep tech businesses in Europe. The EIC Accelerator selected 78 companies from the 1092 proposals submitted for this cohort.

Sonio’s current funding total consists of an equity investment of €7.5M and a grant of €2.5M. This investment is made in addition to the €5M the company previously raised in June 2022 through Elaia, OneRagtime, and Bpi France.

Sonio plans to use the funds to speed up the release of new platform features such as embedded image recognition and genomics. The funds will also be used by the company to hasten commercial development in the USA and Europe.

“Receiving such a significant funding from one of the most competitive accelerators in the world is a testament to the innovation Sonio brings to fetal medicine” said Cécile Brosset, Chief Executive Officer and co-Founder of Sonio. « Our hard work has been fruitful. I am now more confident than ever that we can help secure pregnancy care worldwide with collective and artificial intelligence.”

“For us this funding means more research, more clinical studies, more innovation, more patents filed in Europe and ultimately an improved quality of care for patients, wherever they are. We are eager to intensify our scientific partnerships with some of the best experts in Fetal Medicine and Artificial Intelligence,” said Rémi Besson, Chief Scientific Officer and co-Founder of Sonio.

Sonio, a company founded in 2020 by Cecile Brosset and Remi Besson, bills itself as the only SaaS platform that brings together technological advancement, medical expertise, and crowdsourcing to let healthcare providers provide secure prenatal care.

The company provides a unique AI programme that combines the knowledge of prenatal medicine practitioners with various types of medical, imaging, genetic, and environmental data in order to maximise prenatal screening and diagnosis.

Sonio was created by a group of entrepreneurs, scientists, medical professionals, and IT experts. Over 250 healthcare professionals are currently using it.

The company has also formed several partnerships, including one with Samsung France, one of the leading manufacturers of women’s health ultrasounds, as well as with specialised distributors Lifecell in India, Manager Systems in Brazil, and Dynamic Medicals in Nigeria.

The company’s multidisciplinary team has already brought 2 products to market:

  • Sonio Diagnostics, designed for expert diagnostic ultrasounds, was CE marked and found its first clients in record time.
  • Sonio Pro, tailored to secure and bring more efficiency to routine pregnancy ultrasounds, was launched in October and has already convinced customers in Europe.
