- Dougs lands € 50 million by Expedition to enable AI agents to prepare the accounts, after which the accountants will review and sign them.
- Doug says that the business is profitable, since it serves over 50,000 clients and has a turnover of €52.2 million.
- While other companies offer AI tools to accountants, Dougs takes on the role of the accountant itself and aims to make his company the largest in France.
The French company Dougs had been running for eight years without any outside investors. Its chief executive officer, Patrick Maurice, frequently asked himself, ‘Why do we need to suffer dilution? Why do we need money?’
The Lyon-based company just secured a €50 million investment from Expedition Growth Capital. According to Maurice, one reason for the investment is to put more pressure on competitors.
The money will enable AI agents to prepare clients’ accounts, after which a chartered accountant will review and sign off on them. Maurice stated in an interview with Tech Funding News that Dougs has already produced around 50 financial statements without any human assistance and anticipates that automated production will become the standard within a year.
Dougs states that it has been profitable since it began and hopes to reach €100 million in annual recurring revenue and 100,000 customers in the coming years.
From four founders to 836 employees
Doug’s was founded in 2015 by four people: Maurice, his wife Véronique, Sarah Jaouani, and Florent Galland, chief operating officer, the latter of whom invested €10,000 from his own pocket.
Galland developed the first version of the app in his kitchen and launched it in January 2015, providing free access to early testers since the payment system had not yet been set up.
Initially, the growth was slow. Between 2015 and 2020, the company grew from 0 to 29 employees and now has 836. The team now consists of more than 120 engineers, around 200 accountants and over 200 lawyers.
Dougs received its first external investment in July 2023 when Expedition invested €25 million. At that time, the company had 14,000 customers, €15 million in recurring revenue, and 250 employees.
Since then, customers, revenue, and staff have all more than tripled. The company provides its services to over 50,000 small businesses and has an annual recurring revenue of more than €50 million.
According to Maurice, Dougs achieved a turnover of €52.2 million by September 30, 2026, making it the 31st-largest chartered accounting firm in France. He said the company acquired more than 2,700 new customers in September and is targeting 50% annual growth, although the most recent figures are slightly lower.
Its aim is to become the largest chartered accounting firm in France within three years.
Software-level margins in a services business
While most AI accounting firms provide services as tools for accountants, Dougs takes on the role of the accountant itself.
The company states that it holds the client relationship and manages the work. Maurice emphasises that this is important in France because, according to him, the Ordre des Experts-Comptables grants chartered accountants a monopoly.
That is the reason why Dougs claims it can achieve software-like economics. The company has gross margins exceeding 80%, whereas normal margins are under 50%. Dougs also states that each accountant can look after many more clients than at traditional firms. According to Maurice, each employee at Dougs deals with around 600 financial statements a year, compared with about 40 at a traditional firm.
Over the last 10 years, Dougs has filed hundreds of thousands of tax returns and financial statements and, as a result, has created its own database containing information on workflows, customer details, exceptions, and professional decisions. Maurice states that this record includes 12 years’ worth of voice and written communications and that it is stored on local servers rather than on the public internet.
Dougs’ AI is now looking after the bookkeeping processes, and the company is developing agentic systems. The next step is to get these systems to produce financial statements, after which a chartered accountant will examine and sign them.
Dougs believes the French market for accounting and related services is over €20 billion, of which €1.5 billion comes from its main sector. Globally, AI in accounting is expected to grow from $10.8 billion in 2026 to $88.1 billion by 2034, at a 30% compound annual growth rate.
Franchises, Italy, and a message to competitors
Dougs will launch a master franchise comprising 300 people starting in January or February 2027, none of them having physical premises. The franchisees will be trained to go to entrepreneurs at their businesses and show them the platform, with a particular focus on senior owners who are less at ease with technology.
Pennylane is a major competitor. On 20 January 2026, the French accounting platform raised € 175 million in a Series E round, with TCV as the lead investor, at a $4.25 billion valuation.
“Artificial intelligence is radically transforming the services sector, but its impact is all the greater when underpinned by deep domain expertise. Dougs is a rare example of this fusion in the accountancy industry. The company is mastering the optimal mix of deterministic code, frontier AI and certified professionals to deliver industry-leading service and value to a rapidly growing base of 50,000 customers,” said Oliver Thomas, managing partner at Expedition Growth Capital.
Maurice stresses that the company’s goal is mission-driven, and becoming France’s largest chartered accountancy is how it will do it. The main test is whether a chartered accountant can sign many more files without lowering quality, which is key for keeping clients.
