To reshape the future of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Destinus Group BV has signed a binding agreement to acquire Zurich-based Daedalean AG for $225 million. The transaction, comprising both cash and stock, is expected to close by the end of 2025 and will merge two of Europe’s most innovative aerospace players.

The acquisition underscores Destinus’ ambition to strengthen its position in both the defence and civil drone markets at a time when demand for autonomous capabilities is accelerating. Global defence budgets, evolving aviation regulations, and the push for resilient air systems are fueling a wave of consolidation across the drone industry. The Destinus–Daedalean deal is one of the most notable examples of this strategic realignment.

Expanding technical power

Founded in 2021 by Mikhail Kokorich, Destinus has become one of Europe’s largest UAV manufacturers, with a workforce of over 500 and operations spanning Germany, Switzerland, France, the UK, Spain, and Ukraine. While the company is best known for its flight systems expertise and manufacturing scale, it is now deepening its focus on intelligent autonomy, an area where Daedalean’s capabilities are unmatched.

Daedalean, established in 2016 by a former engineer from Google and SpaceX Luuk van Dijk, is known for developing safety-critical avionics software. Its systems are designed to assist in piloting, provide environmental awareness, and ensure navigation even in GPS-denied environments, an increasingly vital requirement in contested or remote airspaces. The company employs over 150 specialists, including 13 PhDs with expertise spanning avionics, navigation, and advanced computational methods.

By bringing Daedalean into its fold, Destinus gains access to a highly skilled team and a portfolio of certified technologies that can be immediately integrated into future UAV designs. These tools are expected to enhance decision-making for operators, improve swarm coordination, and increase resilience in complex mission scenarios.

A shift toward autonomy in defence

While Daedalean has traditionally served the broader aviation market, recent months have seen it place greater emphasis on defence-related applications. The company has signalled a pivot toward developing systems capable of operating independently in dynamic and high-risk environments, reducing the need for constant human control.

This shift mirrors broader defence trends in 2025, where investment is increasingly directed toward autonomous solutions that can adapt in real time to evolving conditions. The combination of Destinus’ manufacturing infrastructure and Daedalean’s software innovation aims to meet this demand head-on, positioning the merged entity as a leading provider of advanced UAV systems for both military and civilian use.

Accelerating innovation and reducing time-to-market

The integration is expected to deliver faster product development cycles. Destinus’ aerospace engineering and manufacturing strengths, coupled with Daedalean’s software proficiency, create a vertically integrated platform capable of bringing new UAV concepts from design to deployment more efficiently.

Both companies have collaborated in the past, laying a foundation of mutual trust and technical compatibility. This shared history will likely ease the integration process and enable early delivery of joint innovations.

For defence applications, the focus will be on systems that can operate in contested environments with minimal operator oversight. In the civilian sector, the combined expertise could enable safer cargo drones, enhanced air taxis, and more effective environmental monitoring platforms.

A broader industry context

Autonomous flight technology, once viewed as a futuristic concept, is now central to both military planning and commercial strategy. Countries are investing in systems that can conduct surveillance, deliver supplies, and perform reconnaissance without endangering human crews. In parallel, civilian markets are seeking solutions for logistics, agriculture, and disaster response that are both cost-effective and adaptable.

By combining their strengths, Destinus and Daedalean are positioning themselves to lead in both arenas, offering products that can operate across a spectrum of conditions and requirements.

The next steps

Once the deal closes, integration efforts will focus on aligning product development roadmaps, consolidating research programs, and leveraging combined resources to accelerate market entry for new UAV models.

The acquisition not only expands Destinus’ technological capabilities but also solidifies its role as a key player in Europe’s fast-growing autonomous aviation sector. For Daedalean, joining Destinus offers a pathway to scale its innovations more rapidly and deploy them in a wider range of applications.

As global interest in unmanned systems continues to climb, this deal could prove pivotal in shaping the next generation of aerial technologies, ones that operate with greater independence, reliability, and adaptability than ever before.

Tim Moser, Co-founder and CTO of Destinus, commented:  “This acquisition strengthens our technological position by adding world-class AI expertise and deep-learning specialists. Integrating Daedalean’s innovative solutions and exceptional team will accelerate our strategy to develop, certify, and launch intelligent UAV systems for defence and civil markets.”

“Joining Destinus is a logical next step after our successful collaboration,” added Bas Gouverneur, CEO of Daedalean.   “Together, we’ll deliver innovative AI-driven autonomy, swarm intelligence, and sophisticated decision-making tools to market faster, making flight safer, more resilient, and operationally flexible.”
