Toronto-headquartered AI company Cohere has raised $500 million in an oversubscribed funding round, valuing the company at $6.8 billion. The round was led by Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, with participation from existing investors AMD Ventures, NVIDIA, PSP Investments, and Salesforce Ventures, alongside new backer Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).

This marks an increase from Cohere’s $5.5 billion valuation just over a year ago, when it also raised $500 million. Founded in 2019, the company was an early breakout in the large language model (LLM) space but has focused on serving enterprise clients rather than consumers.

As part of its growth strategy, Cohere announced key leadership hires. Joelle Pineau will join as Chief AI Officer, leading research and product development from Montreal. Pineau is a Professor at McGill University’s School of Computer Science, a core member of the Mila Québec Artificial Intelligence Institute, and formerly served as Meta’s VP of AI Research, where she led the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team.

Francois Chadwick will join as Chief Financial Officer, based in San Francisco. Chadwick previously served as Uber’s acting CFO, overseeing global finance operations and its IPO, and was most recently with KPMG advising high-growth tech companies after serving as CFO at Shield AI.

On this occasion, here are three things to know about Cohere.

Founded by a transformer architect

Cohere was founded in 2019 by two Canadian ex-Google researchers Aidan Gomez and Nick Frosst. Aidan, one of the authors of the groundbreaking “Attention Is All You Need” paper. This research introduced the Transformer architecture, which underpins modern generative AI models, including GPT systems. Gomez’s vision was to apply this breakthrough to real-world business challenges, particularly in secure and compliant environments.

A ChatGPT rival for enterprises

While ChatGPT serves a massive consumer audience, Cohere’s mission is to build AI solutions tailored for enterprise needs. Its products emphasise local data control, ensuring that sensitive corporate or government information doesn’t leave secure environments. The company designs models to comply with stringent industry regulations, offering digital sovereignty to clients in highly regulated sectors.

By focusing on security and compliance, Cohere differentiates itself from general-purpose consumer AI tools. This approach appeals to businesses wary of using consumer models for proprietary data. The result is a positioning as a trusted AI partner for enterprises rather than a mass-market chatbot provider.

Strong global partnerships

Cohere has built a network of strategic alliances with leading global companies, including Dell, SAP, Fujitsu, LG CNS, RBC, and Ensemble Health Partners. These collaborations enable the deployment of AI solutions across industries such as finance, healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and telecommunications. Working alongside enterprise technology providers allows Cohere to integrate its models into clients’ existing infrastructure seamlessly.

These partnerships also serve as a distribution channel, accelerating adoption of its AI tools worldwide. Such alliances demonstrate the company’s credibility and ability to scale globally despite strong competition in the AI market. They also give Cohere access to diverse datasets and use cases, strengthening its models over time.

Competitive positioning in the AI market

While OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta dominate much of the public conversation in AI, Cohere has carved out a niche in enterprise-focused AI solutions. Cohere was backed by Oracle in 2023, but Oracle was not listed among investors in this latest round. The database giant has recently deepened its ties with OpenAI, notably through the large-scale data center project known as Stargate.

The recent funding comes amid heightened competition for AI talent, with Cohere also participating in the industry’s recruitment push. The hire of Pineau from Meta and Chadwick from KPMG reflects the company’s intent to strengthen both its research leadership and financial management as it scales operations.
