$5B raise at $170B valuation: Is Anthropic burning more cash than it raises?

Anthropic is closing in on a $170 billion valuation as it prepares to raise $5 billion in a funding round that’s already oversubscribed by five times. Iconiq Capital leads this funding round, as we reported earlier, with backing from Singapore’s GIC sovereign wealth fund, and may see the addition of a second lead investor.

The company is also accepting increased investment from Middle Eastern government funds, including the Qatar Investment Authority. CEO Dario Amodei has explained that this was a practical move to secure the substantial capital required for growth, even if it meant softening earlier ethical reservations about such investors.

Looking at the numbers, the company’s revenue has grown rapidly this summer, jumping from $4 billion to $5 billion in just a few weeks. They are hoping to reach $9 billion by the end of the year.  But about a quarter of those sales come from just two clients, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, highlighting some customer concentration risk.

Despite strong revenue growth, Anthropic faces a high cash burn rate of around $3 billion annually, driven by the need to invest heavily in expansion, infrastructure, talent acquisition, and technology development to maintain competitiveness against other AI giants.

This upcoming funding round marks a nearly threefold increase in Anthropic’s valuation from $61.5 billion as recently as March 2025, further cementing its position among OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI. While challenges remain, Anthropic’s commitment to “constitutional AI” continues to draw support in the industry.
