ABH Optics, a Danish startup and a spin-off from Technical University of Denmark (DTU), has raised €1 million in pre-seed funding. The investment round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), one of the leading early stage investors in Europe, which recently backed Dcubed and TRAIT

This investment will accelerate the development and commercialisation of its cost-efficient meta-optic eyeglass lenses that offer a significant reduction in thickness for high prescription powers.

Olaf Joeressen, Senior Investment Manager at HTGF, stated: “We are excited to support ABH Optics in their journey to disrupt the eyeglass lenses market with meta-optics. Their innovative approach to lens manufacturing has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with high dioptre prescriptions, and we see a bright future for their technology in the market.”

What change does it bring?

The prescription-based eyeglass lenses market is estimated to be worth $40 billion. With a focus on developing meta optics eyeglass lenses, ABH Optics is set to revolutionise the eyewear industry with its unique, thin, and environmentally friendly lenses. The company does this by changing the optical design and manufacturing process.

What does the company do?

ABH Optics was founded in 2022 by Anders Kristensen, Bo Svarrer Hansen, and Henrik Bense-Peterson in Denmark.

The company has developed a novel type of eyeglass lens using cutting-edge nanotechnology, originating from DTU Health Tech’s projects.

Its proprietary technology allows for easy customisation of lenses, addressing both optical power and structural defects. The result is a product line of ultra-thin, lightweight, and environmentally friendly lenses that reduce plastic usage. ABH Optics targets eyeglass wearers with prescriptions exceeding +/-20 dioptres and will be less than 2 mm thick.

Bo Svarrer Hansen, CEO of ABH Optics, added: “This funding marks a significant milestone for ABH Optics. We are thrilled to have the support of HTGF as we strive to bring our innovative lenses to the market. Our technology not only enhances the comfort and aesthetics for those with high prescriptions but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability.”

What do we think about ABH Optics?

The company is set to revolutionise the eyeglass lens market with its innovative meta-optic technology, offering ultra-thin and lightweight lenses for high prescriptions. Its novel approach, which leverages advanced nanotechnology, significantly enhances user comfort and aesthetics while reducing plastic usage.

This breakthrough addresses a critical need for high-dioptre prescriptions and positions ABH Optics to disrupt the $40 billion eyewear industry with a sustainable and highly customisable solution.
