Warden AI secures new funding as the HR world grapples with AI bias and regulation

The HR technology landscape is rapidly evolving amid intensifying legal and regulatory scrutiny of artificial intelligence. The recent Mobley v. Workday lawsuit, which alleges discrimination by hiring algorithms, has highlighted critical issues of AI accountability and bias. “AI is reshaping high-volume hiring, but without oversight, it risks entrenching bias and exposing companies to serious legal consequences,” said Henrik Wetter Sanchez, General Partner at Playfair.

In an exclusive interview with TFN, Warden AI stated, “Our audits have found that 15% of AI systems fail to meet fairness metrics for one or more demographic groups. Yet, when designed with transparency and equity in mind, an AI model can be up to 45% more fair than humans for women and racial minority candidates.”

With 75% of HR leaders citing AI bias as a primary concern and nearly half reporting that responsible AI directly influences buying decisions, trustworthy oversight has become essential. Warden AI’s platform tackles these challenges by providing continuous, independent auditing and certification for HR-focused AI systems. This enables organisations to measure, manage, and mitigate risks, such as bias, while demonstrating compliance with complex regulations, including the EU AI Act and NYC Local Law 144.

The company has secured solid financial backing with a $10 million valuation and $1.6 million in total funding to date. “This funding round will help us expand our geographic reach and accelerate product innovation at a critical point for HR technology,” noted CEO Jeffrey Pole.

The story of Warden AI

Warden AI was founded in 2023 by CEO Jeffrey Pole and CTO Eduard Schikurski, both with impressive backgrounds in scaling tech unicorns. Pole was the first employee and Head of Product at Onfido, a digital identity verification company, and played a key role in its growth, leading to a $650 million acquisition by Entrust.

He explained, “While Onfido solved one of the biggest trust issues of the last decade, how we can trust people online, I realised during my time there that no one was asking whether we could trust the AI itself. Even more surprising, no regulations surrounded the AI. There was work to do on fairness, and that inspired the foundation of Warden.”

Eduard Schikurski brings 15 years of experience building technology for regulated sectors. As the first full-stack engineer at Monzo Bank, he helped the company scale from 20 to 1,500 employees before serving as Head of Engineering at Abatable. Pole adds, “Eduard and I founded Warden so that the systems shaping people’s careers would be subject to meaningful accountability, not just hype.”

Warden’s mission is to establish a transparent and auditable standard for AI accountability in HR, aiming for a world where “AI drives opportunity, never discrimination.” The founders envision transforming the global job market by enabling organisations to deploy AI responsibly and equitably.

The Warden AI team comprises five members: three males and two females; three are white, one is of mixed race, and one is of Latin American descent. Their multidisciplinary expertise in HR technology, compliance, and engineering helps them stay ahead in a market that demands both technical rigour and regulatory wisdom.

How the company redefines HR audit

Warden AI sets itself apart as the only technology-driven AI auditing platform in HR, rather than a consulting service. As Pole explains, “We’re the only actual tech solution. Our platform is embedded directly into AI systems and acts as an independent third party, continuously monitoring models for bias and other risks.”

The company’s technology tests AI for its treatment of up to ten protected classes and evaluates compliance across multiple regulatory frameworks, using a proprietary dataset to identify issues that other solutions might miss.

The platform also provides an immutable audit trail, including timestamps, audit results, and versioned snapshots of dataset assets, which proves invaluable during legal claims. Organisations can use Warden to benchmark outcomes across groups, identify gaps or systemic inconsistencies, and verify that AI explanations truly align with system behaviour. “We empower companies to provide evidence for their AI systems, both to regulators and to the people those systems affect,” Pole emphasised.

Regarding competition, Warden sees itself as unique: “There are currently no direct tech competitors to our platform,” said Schikurski. “We sometimes compete with consultant auditors like Babl AI or DCI Consulting, but they don’t offer the kind of continuous, embedded monitoring that Warden does.”

What’s next for Warden?

Looking ahead, Warden AI aims to establish itself as the global benchmark for AI compliance and accountability in HR and beyond. “Our focus for the next three to five years is aggressive international expansion and broadening our enterprise offering,” according to Pole. The company plans to strengthen its presence across Europe and North America while exploring new markets and additional use cases in the wider HR and edtech sectors. “We believe the power and benefits of AI are undeniable, but only with transparency and oversight can we earn the trust needed for true adoption,” he said.

Warden’s trajectory is guided by its founders’ belief that “the systems that shape people’s careers should always be subject to meaningful accountability.” By championing transparency and providing organisations with credible, defensible evidence, Warden AI is helping ensure that the next wave of automation is both fair and beneficial for everyone it affects.
