OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Excel, a new beta add-in that brings its AI assistant directly into Microsoft Excel. The feature allows users to build spreadsheets, update models, and analyse data using simple text prompts instead of writing formulas manually.
At the same time, OpenAI has added new financial data integrations inside ChatGPT, allowing finance teams to access trusted market and company data while working on research and analysis.
Inside Excel
With the new add-in, ChatGPT appears as a panel inside Excel workbooks. Users can ask it to create financial models, update spreadsheets, run scenario analysis or explain formulas.
Instead of spending hours building complex formulas or linking multiple sheets, users can describe what they want in plain language, and ChatGPT will help generate the spreadsheet structure.
The tool can also review large workbooks, identify how sheets are connected, trace formula errors and explain why outputs change when assumptions are updated.
Calculations still run directly in Excel, meaning users can check formulas and verify results before accepting changes.
Powered by GPT-5.4
The Excel feature runs on GPT-5.4, OpenAI’s latest model designed to handle financial analysis and spreadsheet tasks more effectively.
OpenAI says the model was trained on real-world finance workflows, including financial modelling, scenario testing, research, and data analysis.
On the company’s internal benchmark used to test investment banking tasks, performance improved from 43.7% with GPT-5 to 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking.
GPT-5.4 is also available in ChatGPT, Codex and through OpenAI’s API.
New financial data sources inside ChatGPT
OpenAI has also expanded the data sources available to users within ChatGPT.
New integrations include major financial information providers such as Moody’s, Dow Jones Factiv, MSCI, Third Bridge, and MT Newswire.
- More providers, including FactSet, S&P Global, LSEG and Daloopa, are also being added.
These integrations allow analysts to pull market data, company filings and research reports directly into ChatGPT.
With the new integrations, ChatGPT can help analysts produce reports faster. Users can analyse financial documents such as earnings reports, presentations, transcripts and spreadsheets to generate: earnings summaries, valuation snapshots, investment research reports, and credit analysis notes.
The outputs include sources and citations and can be exported as PDF or Microsoft Word documents.
OpenAI also added tools that allow users to choose specific data sources and review references used in research.
Availability
ChatGPT for Excel is currently rolling out in beta to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, Pro and Plus users in the United States, Canada and Australia. For enterprise and education organisations, administrators must enable the feature for selected users.
OpenAI said a similar integration for Google Sheets will be released in the future.
