AS American students prepare for another academic year, frustration with writing assignments continues to mount. For many, academic writing is a time-consuming burden that competes with essential study and work hours. Litero AI, a US-based EdTech innovator who recently secured $800,000 in pre-seed funding, aims to address students’ writing struggles through an innovative collaborative AI tutor.

The round was led by an investment program, Pre-Seed to Succeed (P2S), backed by AltaIR Capital, Yellow Rocks, Smart Partnership Capital, and I2BF Global Ventures, with participation from several angel investors.

Nearly 70% of students dedicate over 15 hours weekly to writing assignments—time that many working students simply don’t have. “In the USA, most students must work part-time to cover tuition fees, leaving little time for quality studies. Writing tasks consume around 15 hours weekly, even more for struggling students,” explains Alex Pokatilo, founder and CEO of Litero AI, in an exclusive interview with TFN.

“Consequently, 40% of college students drop out. Of these, 60% cite anxiety and lack of personal support as their reasons. That’s a significant number of people who’ve paid substantial tuition yet never earned a degree. It’s a massive problem we’re addressing.”

Litero aims to transform these statistics by offering what Pokatilo describes as “affordable personalised support 24/7 for every written assignment through an AI tutor that collaborates with students on their essays, boosting confidence and improving writing skills.” He emphasises the impact: “Students achieve better results, reduce dropout risk, and save up to 10 hours weekly.”

According to Sergei Bogdanov, co-founder of Pre-Seed to Succeed and managing partner at Yellow Rocks, who led the funding round, “Today’s college curricula often lack a crucial element: AI prompting skills, which enhance professional growth and are becoming essential for employment. We’re excited to support a product that seamlessly integrates AI into learning and subtly develops students’ skills during academic writing.”

Returning to an old dream: A founder’s motivation and mission

Pokatilo’s quest to reinvent academic support has its roots in a deep history. “In 2018, I attempted to launch another edtech company called Two Sigma Solutions. The name references Bloom’s 2-sigma problem, which confirms the effectiveness of one-to-one education. However, the product was impossible to implement at the time due to the high costs of tutoring. The company remained dormant until the emergence of AI, when everything suddenly fell into place. I revisited the idea and transformed it into Litero.”

He explains his motivation: “I had two main drivers. First, for decades, we’ve known that personal tutoring is the best way to teach and learn. Bloom’s 2-sigma research proved this, but tutoring was too expensive to be commercially viable. Now it’s possible, and Litero AI addresses this specifically for writing skills and essay development across educational institutions. It’s about improving how we learn, and there’s a clear market need.”

Outlining the company’s vision, Pokatilo states, “Litero’s mission is to eliminate the fear, friction, and isolation students experience with writing tasks and foster confidence and insight. We aim to become the default platform for essay writing, which includes both composition and knowledge acquisition. We want to transform average or below-average students into ‘two sigma outliers,’ those performing two standard deviations above the average, through our product.”

How Litero AI works: Human-level tutoring meets advanced technology

At Litero’s core is a multi-agent AI system built on OpenAI and Anthropic models that guides students from blank-page anxiety to polished writing. Pokatilo explains, “What distinguishes us from competitors is our agentic AI tutor that doesn’t just produce output but collaborates with students. This is possible through the orchestration of multiple AI agents on our platform.”

He contrasts the platform with their main competitor: “One key competitor is Jenny AI. What sets Litero apart is our collaborative support from specialised AI agents that function like real tutors, whereas Jenny uses a simpler approach.”

The AI tutor guides students through writing and editing, providing access to an extensive and current citation database. The technology detects plagiarism and AI-generated content, identifies paragraphs needing revision, and provides real-time feedback, including grade predictions for each draft. The platform also supports uploads of drafts, videos, graphs, and diagrams for seamless citation and deeper research engagement.

A vision for every student, everywhere

The company operates globally: “We have a balanced team with nearly equal male and female representation. Our team spans eight countries, making us truly remote-first,” Pokatilo notes.

His future ambitions are substantial: “Our goal for the next few years is to become the default writing platform for the new generation of students. Within three to five years, it will be evident that essays will be written collaboratively with AI, and we aim to become the standard tool, like a ‘Google Docs’ for the AI age. We’ll continue developing our AI tutor to approach the educational efficiency Bloom discussed, helping students master writing and their disciplines with 24/7 support.”

He concludes with Litero’s transformative goal: “By the start of the school year, we aim to enhance Litero AI and develop our AI tutor into a comprehensive personal writing mentor that accompanies students throughout their studies, adapting to their learning style and pace while fostering better progress.”
