Perplexity AI redefined how we search for and consume information online. Founded in 2022, the company has developed a conversational, citation-rich search engine that has quickly gained global attention.

At the helm is CEO and co-founder Aravind Srinivas, alongside co-founders Denis Yarats (CTO), Andy Konwinski, and Johnny Ho. Aravind leads a team combining academic rigour with startup agility, enabling Perplexity to innovate rapidly and expand globally.

In 2025, Perplexity AI secured multiple funding rounds, including a Series B round valuing the company at around $14 billion, followed by a $100 million round at an $18 billion valuation led by prominent investors such as Nvidia and SoftBank Vision Fund 2. The company also launched a $50 million venture fund to back early-stage AI startups, underscoring its broader ambition to cultivate the AI ecosystem.

Beyond his public presence as a tech leader, Aravind Srinivas’s background and approach contain fascinating elements that have shaped Perplexity’s innovative path. Here are five lesser-known facts about this visionary CEO:

Aspirations rooted in research, not founding

Originally, Aravind had no immediate plans to become a founder. He pursued a PhD at UC Berkeley, focusing on representation learning and control systems under the mentorship of AI expert Pieter Abbeel, intending to build a career in academia and deep AI research. His switch to entrepreneurship came as he saw the opportunity to build AI solutions with real-world impact.

Experience at OpenAI, DeepMind & Google Brain

Very few people have worked at all three of the most influential AI labs: OpenAI, DeepMind, and Google Brain. Srinivas is one of them. His time at these organisations gave him rare insight into how large-scale AI systems are trained, deployed, and scaled. He later applied while building Perplexity’s search infrastructure.

A topper at IIT Madras

Born in Chennai, India, Aravind excelled academically early on, graduating as a dual-degree computer science topper from IIT Madras, one of India’s most prestigious technology institutes. This rigorous technical foundation was the springboard to his advanced studies and research career.

From intern to tech leader

During an early internship in Bengaluru, Aravind focused intensely on work rather than leisure, exemplifying the dedication that has propelled his rise. His journey from those focused workdays to leading an $18 billion-valued AI startup speaks to his vision and perseverance.

Blending academics with startup agility

Perplexity’s founding team embodies a fusion of deep research expertise and startup execution experience. Under Aravind’s leadership, the company fosters a culture embracing innovation rooted in research, while maintaining agility and focus on user experience, fueling rapid growth and technological breakthroughs.
