Infertility is a growing global challenge affecting one in six people, causing significant emotional and medical difficulties. Couples currently face prolonged diagnostic processes, taking an average of 3.2 years to receive a proper diagnosis, and encounter generic, non-personalised treatment approaches. Enhanced Fertility, a UK-Portugal-based startup we met during the SIM conference in Portugal, aims to change this landscape completely, offering hope and relief to countless couples.

Speaking exclusively with TFN, Frank Khan Sullivan, co-founder and CTO at Enhanced Fertility, shared: “We cut the time-to-treatment to less than 30 days by offering 100+ at-home tests and analysing patients against 1.4M anonymised patient records with machine learning to accelerate diagnostics and personalise treatment plans.”

Unlike traditional approaches, the EnhancedDx solution considers multiple dimensions of patient care: medical factors, emotional well-being, diet, nutrition, exercise, and psychological support. The impact is already measurable. Sullivan added: “We’ve helped 30 babies be born in just 18 months. That’s the power of combining data science with compassionate care.”

This achievement is particularly significant given that the average IVF success rate per cycle is only about 30%, and many couples undergo multiple cycles without success. Enhanced Fertility’s approach aims to improve these odds by shortening diagnosis time, providing the platform for evidencing better protocols and personalising every aspect of care.

To date, the startup has raised €400,000 from grants and angels, and is growing revenue 30% MoM; now it’s opening a €2M round in June to  bring the AI technology to market, establish key partnerships in the US and scale up its existing EU operations

From 3 years to 30 Days: Redefining fertility diagnostics

Founded three years ago by the husband-and-wife team of Andreia Trigo and Frank Khan Sullivan, Enhanced Fertility evolved from a deeply personal experience into an innovative healthcare solution. At 17, Andreia received a diagnosis of infertility, having been born without a uterus. Motivated by her challenging diagnosis, Andreia, an esteemed King’s College London graduate and a two-time TEDx speaker, transformed her journey into an inspiring mission.

Trigo says, “The diagnosis was devastating. I still remember that day clearly. It is a large part of the reason why I became a nurse, but now, our mission is to make care more accessible. We want to help people start families and minimise the delays when going through care.”

Since its inception, the organisation has achieved significant milestones, including growing from two founders to a team of eight (maintaining an equal gender split at board and team level) and establishing partnerships with over 20 clinics and private hospitals across Europe. As Sullivan notes, “We have learned a lot from private hospitals, but now we’re starting to apply this innovation to public health, such as our current pilot with Hospital de Braga, delivered in partnership with 2CA Braga and the Global Health Accelerator.”

Next-generation fertility care: Where AI meets individual patient needs

At the core of their technology lies a validated approach to fertility diagnostics and treatment. Unlike existing solutions that offer generic, one-size-fits-all approaches, their platform uses advanced machine learning to create truly personalised healthcare experiences.

“We’ve developed a sophisticated system that analyses many different types of lab tests and scans, automatically assessing risk factors for patients based on their electronic health record and comparing the patient case against 1.4 million anonymised patient records in just three seconds. Our technology doesn’t just collect data — it intelligently matches lab test results against diagnostic criteria for 70 different diseases, while always keeping a doctor in the loop,” shared Sullivan with TFN.

He continued: “The magic happens through seven distinct machine learning models simultaneously processing complex medical information. It’s the precursor to a multi-domain, multi-agent AI system that removes a lot of barriers for patients and doctors. We create what we call a ‘Patients Like Me’ report – a comprehensive analysis that considers not just medical data, but also lifestyle factors, clinical history, and individual characteristics. After all, a 25-year-old ovarian cancer survivor has a very different set of needs compared to a 40-year-old who has undergone multiple IVF treatments. Personalisation really matters to the outcome.”

Recent research shows that AI models can improve IVF success prediction and embryo selection, making Enhanced Fertility’s approach both cutting-edge and clinically validated. Sullivan explained: “Data science remains a core strength. We’re not just stopping at fertility diagnostics; we’re exploring how our advanced machine learning models can scale the benefits to other areas of medicine, such as diabetes, cardiac care, and other complex medical fields. Our proprietary platform, Enhanced Diagnostics, represents the ‘deep tech’ behind our company’s value and has the potential to bring personalised medical treatment to millions.”

The key differentiator is the holistic treatment plan. The company doesn’t just recommend medical procedures; it creates comprehensive protocols that include medication, potential surgery, emotional well-being, diet, nutrition, exercise, and psychological support. It’s an eight-component approach that recognises human health as interconnected and deeply personal.

“We built GDPR-first and treated the NHS’s digital strategy as a floor, not a ceiling,” notes Sullivan. The founders see trust as critical for expanding into chronic-care verticals where longitudinal data is gold.

Plans for Enhanced Fertility? A million babies and beyond

In a world where infertility affects millions and access to care remains uneven, Enhanced Fertility’s technology-driven, patient-centric approach offers new hope for families everywhere.

In the next 3-5 years, the startup is set to redefine reproductive healthcare through ambitious, transformative plans. Their journey extends beyond traditional fertility solutions, with a bold vision to help one million babies be born and revolutionise how we approach complex medical challenges.

The expansion strategy is multifaceted. The company aims to enter the U.S. market and may adapt its diagnostic technology for other healthcare areas, such as diabetes and cardiac care. As the world’s largest fertility market, the U.S. presents a significant opportunity, especially as AI-driven diagnostics become the gold standard in reproductive medicine.

“As we look to the future, our goal remains clear: to stay focused on the patient and clinical outcomes. We must continue innovating in reproductive care, but fundamentally, the value will scale to other areas of medicine. We’re just getting started,” concluded Sullivan.
