Enerpoly, a Swedish zinc-ion battery cell technology manufacturer, has opened the world’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory in a move towards a global transition to clean energy in Sweden. This follows the $8.4 million investment raised by the company, back in 2023.

World’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory

The 6,500m² (70,000ft²) Enerpoly Production Innovation Centre (EPIC) facility is located in Rosersberg in northern Stockholm. It is said to achieve a final capacity throughput of 100MWh annually by 2026. The commissioning for the facility has debuted and production will start in 2025.

The megafactory will facilitate the co-development of market-ready battery solutions with customers. It will also Enerpoly to conduct large-scale pilots targeting commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

The opening of the Enerpoly megafactory and its 100% European supply chain highlights Europe’s progress towards becoming the world’s zinc-ion powerhouse. Also, it shows Sweden’s role as a global leader in clean energy innovation. It also lays the foundations for Enerpoly’s future zinc-ion gigafactory production plans.

Enerpoly CEO, Eloisa de Castro said, “Our new manufacturing facility marks a pivotal moment in our journey toward revolutionizing the energy industry. With EPIC, our focus is firmly on driving sustainable innovation and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy storage. By scaling up our production, we can deliver first-of-all-kind deployments in partnership with utilities and battery system integrators across Europe and globally.”

Enerpoly: What does it do?

Zinc-ion batteries are an effective energy storage technology to supplement renewable energy generation given they are affordable, sustainable and have a resilient supply chain, especially when compared to the more ubiquitous lithium-ion battery technology. It uses geographically constrained materials.

This technology helps Europe meet the need to rapidly scale production and development of battery technologies.

Realising this need, Eloisa de Castro, Mylad Chamoun and Samer Nameer co-founded Enerpoly in 2018 in Stockholm. Its patented zinc-ion battery technology utilises zinc and manganese which are globally available and cost-effective and recyclable raw materials that are sourced from Europe.
