Supabase snaps $200M at $2B valuation to power the future of vibe coding: 3 things to know

Database developer Supabase has raised $200 million in a Series D funding round at a $2 billion valuation. The round was reported by Fortune and included participation from top-tier investors such as Accel, Coatue, Y Combinator, Craft Ventures, and Felicis, along with angel investors like OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil.

Supabase is best known for its open-source relational database, which serves as a faster, developer-friendly alternative to Google Firebase. Built on PostgreSQL, the database includes powerful features such as ACID compliance and a suite of tools that make managing databases more intuitive. For example, its Table Editor offers an Excel-style interface, eliminating the need for SQL knowledge, while its auto-generated APIs enable easy data interactions.

Key capabilities also include real-time updates, task automation through Supabase Cron, and global scalability via read-only replicas and Edge Functions. These features reduce latency, enable efficient backups, and support advanced use cases like AI-driven applications.

The funding comes on the heels of surging adoption, with user sign-ups doubling in the past three months, largely fueled by the rise of vibe coding, where AI assists with development. Supabase now serves over 2 million developers managing 3.5 million database environments for companies like Mozilla and GitHub. Its revenue model is built around a managed cloud offering tailored for ease of use.

Given the fresh capital influx, here are three things to know about the San Francisco unicorn.

Developer-friendly and open-source by design

Founded in 2020 in San Francisco by New Zealand-based CEO Paul Copplestone and Ant Wilson. Supabase has raised a total of $398 million to date. It’s now considered one of the most commercially successful open-source projects, blending Postgres with modern tools to streamline backend development for startups and enterprises alike.

Supabase has gained widespread popularity by combining the flexibility of open-source software with an intuitive developer experience. Based on PostgreSQL, it appeals to teams building scalable apps without incurring the high costs associated with enterprise-grade databases like Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server.

Supabase offers tools like authentication, auto-generated APIs, and file storage, all out of the box. Its open-source posture makes it easy to adopt and adapt, while the developer community has contributed to over 81,000 GitHub stars. This broad adoption has helped it reach more than 1.7 million developers globally, cementing its role as a backend favourite for modern app developers.

Perfect for the AI era and vibe coding

The company is emerging as a top choice in the vibe coding movement, where AI automates large parts of the development process. Thanks to its support for vector storage and edge functions, it’s already powering the backend for many AI-native applications.

Supabase supports rapid development through its tagline, “build in a weekend: scale to millions,” aligning with how today’s fast-paced development teams operate. As the next generation of billion-user apps will be AI-driven, Supabase is positioning itself as the infrastructure of choice for both early-stage and enterprise-grade products, particularly in the AI, automation, and web3 sectors.

Strong traction with startups and enterprises alike

The company’s momentum is not limited to indie developers, but it is also a trusted backend for enterprise users. As a Y Combinator alum, it quickly became a staple in the YC ecosystem. Its managed cloud platform is flexible enough to serve hobby projects and robust enough to power large-scale production environments.

By offering a blend of affordability, scalability, and performance, Supabase is quietly becoming the go-to database platform for the modern development stack. Its rising influence is a signal of how open source is shaping enterprise infrastructure in the AI age.
