Aumio, the Berlin-based startup behind the Aumio app which is a mindfulness app for children is today announcing it has raised €3M in Seed funding. One in three children has experienced a mental health issue since the onset of the pandemic, with the ongoing war in Ukraine further intensifying this.

The mindfulness & sleep app Aumio assists children to grow up healthy, self-confident and less stressed with playful exercises and mindful stories. More than 200,000 families are already using Aumio in the DACH region. The platform provides content in English and German, with Ukrainian just recently added to assist the victims of the war.

The round is led by Partech, the international renowned VC alongside byFounders, the Nordic community-powered fund. Other participating angels include the founders of Urban Sports Club, Vivino, Amboss and Researchgate, among others.

How it started

As a child, Jean Ochel noticed growing anxiety within, characterised by insomnia. So often would the young Jean lay awake for hours, battling his unease and ADHD. While studying psychology, he stumbled onto the world of mindfulness which availed the solution to his psychological challenges.

Jean and his co-founders Tilman Wiewinner, Felix Noller and Simon Senkl met in Silicon Valley and partnered with psychologists & tech experts at Freie Universität Berlin to develop the Aumio app. After several studies, the app proved to be effective for sleep, anxiety, stress, and concentration disorders.

How it’s going

Since its launch in March 2021, over 200,000 families in the DACH region have signed up for Aumio. The app is thoughtful toward children, allowing them access to a constantly growing library of child-friendly entertainment in the form of meditation, audio games, yoga exercises and bedtime stories. The startup has also already begun its partnerships with leading German health insurance providers including Allianz, KKH & TK, among others. Additionally, Aumio offers tailored content for schools with more than 900 teachers already using the wellness app in the classroom.

The psychologist and founder of Aumio, Jean Ochel further recounts, “The market for digital mental health products for adults has been growing steadily for years. But there are hardly any offerings for young people. With Aumio, we have developed the first app that is specifically tailored to the needs of families. It playfully teaches children how to deal with stress, anxiety or sleep problems in their everyday lives. Aumio is the app I wish I had when I was a kid with ADHD.”

The global digital health market volume is set to increase to around $640B globally by 2026. The Partech-backed startup’s vision is to become the go-to global mental health platform for entire families in the next five years. With this acquired funding, Aumio hopes to further expand into the EU & the US. Its team of psychologists, educators and tech experts is also expected to triple from its current 10 employees in the coming months. With the release of Ukrainian content for the first time, alongside German and English content, the team plans to allow the support for another language by the end of 2022.

“The trend shows that mental health will become as important as physical health in the coming years. Aumio is helping thousands of families with mindful parenting today. After tremendous growth in the company’s first phase, we are proud to be on board as a key investor, supporting its ambitious mission.” stated Finn Weise, an investor at Partech.
