The most interesting and genuine digital format is video. The “decade of downloads” saw fewer long-form videos watched on YouTube and Netflix than it did billions of short-form videos uploaded, watched, and shared on platforms like Instagram Stories, TikTok, Reels, and others.

api.video, which is now looking to capitalise on the power of this video-led content, has raised $12M in a Series A round led by MMC Ventures, with participation from Open Ocean, Blossom Capital, and Financiere Saint James.

Environment-friendly initiatives

The funding will also allow the API-first platform to concentrate on more environmentally friendly initiatives, enabling the company to lessen the negative effects of video and its extensive data storage requirements.

With the additional funding, api.video will further its market penetration into Europe as part of its goal to create a global EDGE infrastructure that prioritises video. It will expand the api.video team globally by hiring fresh talent. The funds will go toward the introduction of new features. api.video was created and built specifically to cater to larger projects with specialised requirements like advanced data and security.

The cloud-based platform of api.video eliminates these time, cost, and complexity barriers. Using a single API, it replaces the complex video workflow system with a custom end-to-end solution. This enables its clients, who include household names like Bauer Media Group, Stoner Cats, and BNP Paribas, to quickly integrate video services. As a result, developers no longer need to manage various APIs to handle various, specialised video processes, such as uploading and transcoding, thanks to api.video.

Founded in 2019 by Cedric Montet, api.video is a global API-first platform for managing and delivering large-scale online video. api.video handles all of the complexities of video management through a simple and transparent API, allowing developers to create a customised video experience.

Founders’ background

Cédric Montet, a self-taught entrepreneur, dropped out of university at the age of 21 to launch his first business. He bootstrapped the first one to profitability before launching api.video in 2019. At present, the team employs 40 people which has 60% men and 40% women.

“We’re helping product builders join the video-first world. What is often thought of as a simple journey between ‘uploading’ and ‘click and play’, in fact, involves a variety of complex steps in the back-end. It is very inefficient for developers to build custom tooling in-house, especially when video is not the core product offering of that organization. Today’s fast-moving teams are better off investing developer energy and focusing on their core value and relying on api.video to handle all the complex parts,” said Cédric Montet, CEO and founder, api.video.

“It is exciting to see that our vision, as well as our execution to date, has attracted interest and investment from top-tier venture capital firms. This financing round will allow api.video to stay focused on providing a frictionless experience to our users and be recognized as the default video solution by small businesses and enterprises.” continued Cédric Montet.
